Don’t forget to vote March 15, unless you’re voting for Trump

Many community newspapers profile and make endorsements of candidates for political elections, such as the Primary coming up on March 15.

Here at the Independent we cover local elections and profile candidates, but we don’t typically endorse specific candidates, but if we do, it’s only at the level of alderman and mayor. We don’t tell our readers how to vote, but we try to keep them informed as best we can, knowing people are often too busy to follow every race in-depth. We REMIND them to vote, we advise the dates and times the polls are open. In the past we have not ever endorsed at the County or State level, and certainly not at the national level – until today.

This year The Independent has decided to make an endorsement solely for Republican Primary in the race for President of the United States. Our recommendation is to vote for somebody, anybody, except Donald Trump. We urge you to join the ABT Party – Anybody But Trump.

Simply put, Trump’s candidacy is based on loud talk and no substance. He has put down women, journalists, medical doctors, people of other races, while embracing – well, at least not declining – the support of David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the KKK, up until Mar. 3. (As an update, on Mar. 3, pressure forced Trump to denounce Duke and disavow him and his support. Also on Mar. 3, Trump announced that he would consider a run as an Independent (no relation!), if the heat from the Republican Party didn’t let up.

“I’m not being treated the right way [by the Republican Party], I’m not being treated properly,” he told reporter Jake Tapper on the CNN news show “State of the Union” on Mar. 3.

His poll numbers and results in the primaries so far show him with a very strong lead. And he’s taking credit for all the “new” voters in the Republican party, whom he believes have come on board just to support him.

Donald Trump is an embarrassment to our country and to the Republican Party. It might be too late to reverse this train wreck, but on March 15th, Republican voters in Illinois will at least have a chance to make a statement. We urge you to join the ABT Party and vote for somebody, anybody, but Donald Trump.
