In its October 1 edition, the Independent published the news that a woman working at a gas station appeared to have been abducted. The service station had surveillance videos, which showed the “suspect” jumping over the counter and taking all the money in the register. After that, he took the worker and left with her in his car.
It was later revealed that the abduction was a hoax plotted between the woman and her boyfriend, who played the part of the suspect. Found later that day, the two were arrested and the stolen money was recovered.
Arrested were Simone Boyd, 21, of Lombard, and Brandon Morris, 21, of Melrose Park. Both were charged Felony Theft and taken to DuPage County Jail with bond set at $10,000.
Prosecutors agreed to drop the other charges against Boyd if she pleaded guilty to theft, which she did at DuPage County Court on November 17. She was given two years probation.
