Elmhurst Police Reports

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage to property/motor vehicle/criminal trespass to property/ motor vehicle/damage to property

July 18

A city worker told police that he drove by a light pole in the 400 block of W. Butterfield at around 12:55 p.m. and observed it had been knocked down.

July 15

A victim in the 400 block of Willow told police that an unknown suspect threw a rock through the front picture window of his residence, causing damage to the residence. The victim reports seeing a dark car flee the area south on Willow.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor

July 19

Burglary to a vehicle was reported at a roofing company in the 200 block of N. West Ave. at around 6:31 a.m. Police said an officer responded to the business for a reported car burglary. A complainant told police he noticed several tools had gone missing from a work van at the above location.

July 18

• Robert Caffero, 55, of Melrose Park, was arrested near Route 83 and North Avenue at around 9:16 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Caffero was found to be DUI and to be wanted out of DuPage County. He was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, expired registration, improper lane usage and transported to DuPage County Jail on the warrant.

• Erica Janovsky, 22, of Oak Brook, was arrested near Route 83 and Riverside at around 1:06 a.m. and charged with DUI drugs/alcohol combination, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, improper lane usage and failure to signal following a traffic stop.

July 15

Paul Villagomez, 57, of Stone Park, was arrested near North and Oaklawn at around 1:33 a.m. and charged with DUI, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage following a traffic stop.

July 14

• Samantha Jackson, 31, of Elmhurst, was arrested near St. Charles and Spring at around 1:32 a.m. and charged with DUI and improper lane usage following a traffic stop.

• Scott Jantz, 37, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 10:55 p.m. and charged with DUI and driving on the wrong side of the roadway following a traffic stop.

• Joseph Kwak, 27, of Berwyn, was arrested near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 1:43 a.m. and charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control device and no insurance following a traffic stop.

Possession of cannabis/drug paraphernalia/controlled substance/tobacco

July 20

• Taven Liddell, 25, of Berwyn, was arrested near Butterfield and Chatham at around 12:59 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and having one taillight following a traffic stop.

• Juan Solano, 21, of Glendale Heights, was arrested in the 300 block of S. West at around 10:21 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Solano was found to be in possession of heroin and DUI-drugs. He was charged with aggravated DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, aggravated driving while license revoked and failure to signal when required.

July 19

Michael Hiera, 36, of Wood Park, was issued a citation by police near York and Grand at around 1:03 p.m. for possession of cannabis following a traffic stop.

July 17

Mark Lube, 37, of Lombard, was arrested near Grand and Church at around 1:36 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Lube was found to be in possession of heroin and hypodermic needles. He was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor unlawful possession of hypodermic needles and aggravated driving while license revoked.

July 16

• Darrell Jefferson, 36, of Chicago, was arrested near Lake and I-290 at around 1:05 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Jefferson, a passenger in the vehicle, was observed rolling a cannabis joint and found to be in possession of cannabis. He was charged with possession of cannabis.

• Subsequent to a check on well-being call, police said an unknown suspect was located and was in possession of cannabis. She was taken into custody and charged with possession of cannabis and a curfew violation, and released to a family member.

July 14

Fabian Colon, 21, of Chicago, was arrested near North and Emroy at around 12:01 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and speeding following a traffic stop.

Suspicious circumstances

July 17

A victim in the 200 block of S. Fairview told police that an unknown suspect(s) broke into her home through the back door and took a zoom lens for her camera. She also stated that someone took her cell phone, put an encryption on it and returned it. An officer checked the residence and found the back door knob and dead bolt wrapped in duct tape to prevent another burglary.

July 20

• Craig S. Johnson, 48, of Bellwood, was arrested in the 500 block of Mitchell at around 3:41 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a report of stolen lawn tools from the back of a landscaping truck, Johnson was apprehended and positively identified. According to police, he admitted to burglarizing the victim’s truck for tools, and was charged with burglary.

• Retail theft was reported at a food store in the 900 block of S. York at around 3:01 a.m. A complainant told police that while at the cash register, she observed a white female with a large black purse exit the store at a fast pace causing an alarm to activate. The female entered the passenger side of a black SUV and left the parking lot. The female is described as being between 30 and 35 years old, around 5’6”, with long strawberry blonde hair, wearing a peach shirt, tan shorts and white sandals. A second suspect was described as a black male with long hair wearing an unknown color hat and a light colored shirt. The vehicle was described as being a black newer model SUV or minivan.

• A complainant in the 400 block of E. Court told police that they found an unauthorized account on her credit report.

July 19-July 20

A victim in the 200 block of Forest told police that sometime between 6:15 p.m. July 19 and 12 noon July 20, an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicle that was parked in her driveway. The victim noticed her backpack was missing.

July 19

A victim in the 100 block of E. Van Buren St. told police that while she was checking her account balance she noticed an unauthorized charge to Nicor Gas. The victim suspects her ex-boyfriend had made the transaction.

July 9-July 19

Andrew James, 28, of Chicago, was arrested at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. at around 1:21 p.m. Police said that while investigating an identity theft at the dealership, an officer was advised of a suspect who had allegedly purchased a vehicle using someone else’s Social Security number. James, the suspect, came back to the dealership after being called about the problem. James was charged with identity theft.

July 17-July 18

An employee at a pizza restaurant in the 100 block of Addison told police that an unknown suspect removed two patio umbrellas from the outdoor seating area between the above dates.

July 17

• Janette Perez, 31, of Chicago, was arrested in the 400 block of N. York at around 3:22 a.m. Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle, Perez provided an officer with false identification information. Perez was then found to be wanted by the DuPage County Sheriff on three warrants and the Aurora Police Department on one warrant, according to police. She was charged with obstructing identification, and then transported to DuPage County Jail on the warrants.

• Thomas Santella, 35, of Bensenville, was arrested in the 600 block of N. York at around 9:40 a.m. Police said that subsequent to observing suspicious activity, officers learned Santella had a revoked Illinois driver’s license. The suspect was observed driving from the scene, and was then stopped by officers, who were able to determine Santella had committed a retail theft at a restaurant, police said. He was charged with retail theft and driving while license revoked.

July 16

Susan M. Osterman, 51, of Villa Park, was arrested at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:14 p.m. Police said Osterman placed unpaid clothing items on underneath the clothes she had worn into the store. She was charged with felony retail theft.

July 15

A victim at a store in the 100 block of S. Route 83 told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt, a black-red-gray baseball cap, army green pants and dark colored gym shoes implied he had a gun and asked them to open the cash registers. Further investigation is pending.

July 6-July 13

Complainant at a restaurant in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police he noticed a pressure washer missing from the storage shed.

July 12

• A complainant at a business in the 100 block of Addison told police that the office computers were hit with a Cerver Ransomware Virus. An unknown suspect requested payment in bitcoins. The case is pending investigation.

• A victim in the 100 block of N. Willow told police she is in the process of rehabbing the property. On the above date, a worker noticed that an unknown suspect had removed an attached metal ladder from the basement escape window.

Jan. 1-March 1

A victim in the 100 block of Rex told police that an unknown suspect used her identity to open an account with a company named “RCN.” The suspect used the account for three months for service to an address in Chicago.

Violating no-contact order

July 20

Daniel Odom, 18, of Elmhurst, was arrested at around 2:18 p.m. Police said the victim had an order of protection against Odom, who admitted to meeting with the victim. Odom was charged with a violation of a stalking no contact order.

Warrant service

July 16

Police said an unnamed suspect who was driving a vehicle involved in a traffic accident fled on foot following the accident. The suspect was later found to have been wanted out of Bensenville after fleeing a traffic stop. Further investigation is pending.
