ALLAN GLEN MEYER
The family’s private memorial service for long-time Sears employee and popular Chicagoland caricaturist Allan Glen Meyer, age 83, is being held December 10 at the William J. “Bill” Mueller Memorial Gazebo in Lombard, IL.
Born December 10, 1936, in Peoria, Illinois, Allan died December 2, 2020; in accord with his wishes, cremation has taken place. He grew up in downstate Creve Coeur where he attended Gerber grade school, LaSalle Junior High, and East Peoria Community High School. He moved to Chicago in 1954 to study advertising design at the Art Institute of Chicago before joining Sears Roebuck as assistant to the advertising manager.
In 1960 Allan was drafted into the U.S. Army, completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and radio school at Fort Gordon, GA; he later served with the 256th Signal Company in Verdun, France, and in Germany. After his discharge in 1962, Allan toured the western United States in his Healey Sprite before returning to Sears advertising where he worked as a layout artist. While working at Sears, Allan became active in Toastmasters International, winning numerous humorous speaking contests, most notably the 1981 five-state Regional Humorous Speaking competition with a memorable speech entitled, “Vending Machine Blues.”
Allan moved to Lombard in 1970, and in 1982 married his high school friend Marymae Challenger. After his early retirement from Sears in 1989, they founded Parody Productions, Ltd., a home-based business employing about a dozen caricature artists who entertained at area schools, trade shows, private and corporate events. Given a life-expectancy of six to eight years when he was stricken with a rare form of terminal cancer in 1996, they closed the business in 2010, yet Allan defied the odds and continued to enjoy making people smile with his artwork until shortly before he died.
Allan served as Secretary of Lombard Senior Men’s Club and was an avid reader of American history and aviation who enjoyed auto racing, music, backpacking, canoeing, skiing, photography, travel, nature, and his pets. Above all, he loved being Grandpa to Rocco Allan Cilella and Alexandra Ray Cilella. He will long be remembered by those whose likenesses and personalities he captured in caricature with his unique dry wit and artistic talent.
In addition to Marymae and the grandchildren, survivors include stepson, Kendall Challenger of Crystal, Minnesota; son-in-law Rocco C. Cilella of Wheaton; sister-in-law Sharon Meyer, nieces Lori Meyer, Janet Burt, Dianne Meyer, and Elaine Kent, all of Washington and nephew Russ Meyer of Texas; and brother-in-law Kermit Dodson of Addison, as well as their extended families. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Margaret Cook Meyer; his brother Larry Meyer; and his beloved stepdaughter Kristine Renae Challenger Cilella.
Memorial donations may be made to Amita Health Hospice or to International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation.
