Veterans are not forgotten

Honor Flight Chicago is grounded due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but volunteers have not forgotten our veterans, such as Vietnam veteran and Lombard resident Robert Daehnke (center photo), who received a yard sign honoring his service. Co-Director Doug Meffley said, however, that the signs are not a substitute for a day trip to Washington, D.C., and he hopes the veterans can make the trip in 2021. Frederick Cederholm (right) and Joseph Martinet (left, holding a bottle of champagne given to him by a neighbor) were among the Lombard veterans who received either a sign or window decal from Honor Flight Chicago, which has been visiting veterans since the week of July 4. For now, the signs represent that they are not being forgotten while Honor Flight Chicago’s trips to Washington, D.C., are put on hold due to the pandemic.
