Quiet remembrance

Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 2801 did not hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent years the post has held its Memorial Day service at Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park, 320 E. Kenilworth Ave. The photo shows the flags at the park during this year’s holiday weekend. The American flag at the park is surrounded by flags representing the branches of the nation’s military—the United States Navy, the United States Air Force, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Merchant Marine, the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps. The VFW post’s recent Memorial Day services at the park have included brief speeches, the reading of the names of Villa Park veterans who have passed away during the previous year and the laying of a wreath to honor those who died while serving the country. The post’s annual Memorial Day ceremony regularly concludes with the sounding of taps from the north and south sides of the park.
