Police Reports

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

April 19

Police said officers responded to the 100 block of W. Virginia at around 7 p.m. for the report of a battery. The reporting officer met with the victim who stated he was assaulted by one of his friends. The victim stated he knows who hit him but does not wish to sign complaints and does not want the matter investigated. Medics arrived on scene and the transported the victim to Elmhurst Hospital.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage

April 19

Joseph Whelan, 26, of Villa Park, was charged with trespass to property at Elmhurst Hospital at around 10:03 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of an intoxicated subject. The reporting officer met with security who reported Whelan drove to the hospital but appeared to be intoxicated, according to police Upon further investigation, police said it was found that Whelan was in violation of a no trespass notice from the hospital.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance

April 18

A 26-year-old Carol Stream woman was charged with domestic battery, attempted aggravated battery and three counts of criminal damage to property in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 1:40 p.m. Police said officers responded for a complaint of a domestic dispute in a parking lot of the above location. The suspect had attempted to strike the victim with a vehicle.

Police said officers observed a verbal altercation in the parking lot of a hotel in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 1:21 p.m., involving a male and female. Officers investigated the disturbance and determined the altercation to be a verbal domestic dispute between the two parties. The argument never turned physical and both parties were sent on their way.

April 16

A victim in the 700 block of N. Church told police at around 3:46 p.m. he terminated the suspect’s employment at due to policy violations. The suspect allegedly became threatening towards the victim and other employees. A reporting officer contacted the suspect via telephone and was advised to cease any contact with the company or employees.

April 19

Police said that officers responded for a complaint of a domestic dispute in the parking lot near Roosevelt and I-290 at around 2 a.m. The suspect had attempted to strike the victim with a vehicle.

Obstruction

April 22

Brian D. Pittman, 28, of Villa Park, was charged with obstructing a police officer in the 100 block of Addison at around 7:34 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of a disturbance. Subsequent to a disagreement with the landlord, Pittman refused to leave the premises and provided a false name to the reporting officer, according to police.

Possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia

April 20

Steven W. Grove, 35, of Clintonville, Wis., was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia at a hotel in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 1:46 p.m. Police said Grove also had a warrant out of DuPage County. According to police, officers responded for a well-being check at the hotel where they found Grove sleeping inside the vehicle. Two bags containing a white powdery substance were observed in plain view along with a plastic straw with white residue on it, police said. According to police, an additional 26 bags containing white powdery substance, hypodermic needle and other drug paraphernalia were located in the vehicle.

Suspicious circumstances

April 16

A victim in the 700 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 11:14 a.m. he received phone calls from Texas with an unknown person speaking Spanish. He then received a suspicious video. The reporting officer contacted the owner of the phone and they stated they were not involved in any calls or texts.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/robbery

April 21-April 22

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 600 block of W. Armitage. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked Ford Explorer sometime between the above dates and removed his wallet. The victim was informed of a charge on his debit card and two other transactions that were declined. The victim’s driver’s license and Social Security card were entered into LEADS as stolen.

Dec. 7, 2019-April 22

Theft was reported at a cabinet company in the 900 block of Larch. The complainant, who works for the company, told police that on three separate occasions between the above dates, checks that were mailed to his company had been intercepted and never reached his company. An unknown suspect cashed one check and two additional attempts were declined. An investigation is pending.

April 20

Theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Haven at around 6:43 p.m. A responding officer spoke with a complainant who found six open packages in the main lobby of her apartment complex with some of them missing their contents. The packages had various addresses listed on them. An investigation is pending.

April 18

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of E. First at around 7:21 p.m. A responding officer spoke a victim who was unaware his information was used to purchase a home theatre system. The victim will sign complaints against the suspect.

Feb. 25-April 15

Theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Fullerton. A reporting officer met with the complainant who stated an unknown suspect fraudulently cashed several business checks. Six checks were sent out to customers; however, the checks had been deposited by an unknown person.

April 7

Nichole Sophia Johns, 26, of Chicago, was charged with burglary and retail theft, while Charles E. Beachem, 28, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft, burglary and unlawful possession of a controlled substance at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 10:41 a.m. Police said a reporting officer met with an employee who stated the suspects were seen leaving the store with large amounts of unpaid merchandise. The suspects allegedly abandoned the merchandise and fled after they were confronted by store employees outside.

March 27

Theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of N. Larch at around 1:20 p.m. The complainant, an accountant for the store, told police that a vendor owed them money. Upon contacting them, the complainant was told they had written a check in March for the money owed to the store. The police report said the check had been altered and cashed by an unknown person.
