Messiah Lutheran presents Spirituals for Black History Month

At 10 a.m., Messiah Lutheran Church at 130 W. Butterfield Rd., will present A Service of Spirituals to celebrate African American History month. Singers will perform African American Spirituals within the Lutheran Order of Service. Free and open to the public. Info: 630-279-4775.

GreenMan Theatre Troupe presents its 16th annual Murder Mystery Fundraiser, “Speakeasy or Die Hard 2″ in the upstairs banquet hall at Angelo’s Ristorante at 247 N. York St. in Elmhurst. Doors open an hour before the show. Friday and Saturday performances start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $55 and include a buffet-style Italian feast. Cash bar. All Tickets MUST be purchased in advance at greenmantheatre.org. Tickets are not available at the door. Info: 630-464-2646.

Sunday, Feb. 23 

At 2 p.m. at the Elmhurst History Museum, exhibits curator Dan Bartlett will share in-depth details about Chicagoland railroad history, the effect of the railroad on Elmhurst and the creation of the On the Right Track exhibit. Friday, Feb. 28 

At 7 p.m., Immaculate Conception Parish, 134 W. Arthur St., will host an Ecumenical Prayer Service. Come for an hour of meditative singing, scripture, candlelight, silent reflection and prayers for the world in this ecumenical prayer service.   All are welcome.

Saturday, Feb. 29

• From 5-7 p.m., the Elmhurst Lions Club will hold its 34th Annual All You Can Eat Pizza Party Fundraiser at Sandburg Middle School. Enjoy Roberto’s Pizza, cookies and soda. Tickets, available at the door, are $8 each; families of 5 or more, $35; kids 6 and younger eat free. Proceeds will be used to support various charities in the local area.

• At 7 p.m., the Elmhurst Choral Union will gives its cabaret program, “Medley of Melodies” at First United Methodist Church, 232 S. York. Free-will donations will be taken to benefit ECU’s programs.  Info: elmhurstchoralunion.org.

Sunday, March 1

From 8 a.m. to 12 noon, local Scouts BSA Troop 82 is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the American Legion T.H.B. Post #187, 310 W. Butterfield Road in Elmhurst. The menu will include pancakes, sausage links, coffee and orange juice. Proceeds will help underwrite the Troop’s scouting program which includes monthly campouts and high-adventure experiences. Tickets are $5 in advance of March 1 or $6 at the door.  Children 5 and younger are free. Tickets can be purchased at troop82elmhurst.org.

Tuesday, March 3

At 7 p.m., Elmhurst College welcomes Pulitzer prize-winning author Rick Atkinson, who will present ‘Follow the Leaders: What our Military History Teaches about being in charge.” It will be held in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College. A book signing will follow, with copies of his books available for purchase. Admission is $20 for the general public and free for Elmhurst College students, faculty, staff and alumni. From 9-11:30 a.m., Elmhurst History Museum hosts Riding the Rails Bus Tour, with  railroad industry professional Dave Phillips, to important historic and modern day railroad sites in the Elmhurst area.  Limited to 25 participants. Tuesday, March 17

• Primary Election Day – don’t forget to vote.

• Beginning at 6 p.m., the 24th annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament will be held in the Commons at York High School. Open to all Elmhurst students in grades 2-12, regardless of school attended – public or private. Registration deadline is March 11. Talk to school chess club, or if your school doesn’t have a club, contact Chris Khayat at 630-290-1504.

Sunday, April 26

From 12 noon to 5 p.m., the Elmhurst Junior Women’s Club will host the 16th Kitchen Expedition beginning at 11 a.m. at Dan Wangler Builders, 138 W. Park Ave., where guests will enjoy complimentary coffee and pastries, while obtaining tickets and event booklets. There will be free prize drawings. Proceeds benefit Soaring Eagle Academy and the EJWC. Early bird tickets are $35 before April 1; $40 each after. Tickets may be purchase in advance at elmhurst-juniors.org.

Ongoing programs:

• Widows or Widowers (WOW) meet every third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 537 S. York Road. Admission: $5 per person includes live entertainment. Info: Dave at 630-620-4060 or visit WOW.cfsites.org.
