American Legion hosts Military Ball

At 6 p.m., the American Legion THB Post 187 will hold its 4th Annual Military Ball at the Post at 310 W. Butterfield Rd. The evening includes military tradition, cocktails, dinner and dancing to the sounds of the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Tables of eight are $1,000, while individual tickets are available for $125 each. Valet parking is complimentary. Thursday, Sept. 26

From 6:30-8 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum presents an adult book discussion of Enrique’s Journey. Written by Sonia Nazario and based on the Los Angeles Times newspaper series that won two Pulitzer Prizes, Enrique’s Journey tells the story of a young Honduran boy who ventures to the U.S. to find his mother, who left 11 years earlier to find work and support her family. Discussion led by Elmhurst Public Library and Elmhurst History Museum staff. Program includes after-hours access to exhibits. A limited number of books are available at Elmhurst Public Library.   • At 7 p.m., the League of Women Voters of Elmhurst will meet at the Elmhurst Public Library for an informational presentation by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence about the Firearms Restraining Order law (FRO). Free and open to the public. Not an Elmhurst Library program.

 

Saturday, Sept. 28

At 7 p.m., Grammy-nominated Guitarra Azul wil perform at Bethel United Church of Christ, 315 E. St. Charles Rd. as part of the Music@Bethel series. Wine reception will follow. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $5 for students. A family pass is available at $45 for two adults and up to five children. The church is accessible and parking is free. Sunday, Sept. 29

At 2 p.m., visit the “Power of Children” exhibit at the Elmhurst History Museum and see it interpreted through a brief (10-15 minute) muse-um theatre experience in the gallery by performers from GreenMan Theatre Troupe. Each moving vignette will be followed by a Q&A session with the actor. Fourth in a four-part series through Sept. Drop-in program, children must be accompanied by an adult. Tuesday, Oct. 1

The Crestview Garden Club welcomes Kathi Rose, owner of Kaleidoscope of Floral Design in Roselle, for a demonstration on centerpieces called “Fall into the Holidays.” The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Community Bank of Elmhurst, 330 W. Thursday, Oct. 3

At 7 p.m., Shiza Shahid will present the Roland Quest Lecture at Elmhurst College entitled, “The Extraordinary Impact We Can Create: Lessons from My Journey Co-founding the Malala Fund to NOW.” Held at Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at elmhurst.edu/cultural.

 

Saturday, Oct. 5

From 5-7 p.m., there will be an artists’ reception for the 15th Annual Elmhurst College Alumni Art Exhibition in the Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace, at 200 W. Sunday, Oct. 6

At 2 p.m. in the Elmhurst History Museum Education Center, GreenMan Theatre Troupe brings the “Power of Children” exhibit experience to a close in its final week with a series of dramatic scenes that evoke the characters encountered in the exhibit. Meet Otto and Anne Frank, Ryan White, and others as they share their stories and expand on the exhibit’s powerful messages. Admission: adults 18 and older $5, 17 and younger are free. Friday, Oct. 18

From 6:30-9 p.m. join the Elmhurst History Museum at the Churchville Schoolhouse, 3N784 Church Rd., Bensenville, for a paranormal evening with Ghost Head Soup. Learn about the history of the schoolhouse and cemetery, and hear haunted tales and hair-raising evidence of paranormal activity. Get a demonstration of ghost hunting equipment (participants may bring their own gear). Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes recommended. Note: Age 14+ only. Participants must be able to traverse uneven terrain in low light and must sign a waiver. Admission is $20 per person and registration is required. Beginning at 10 a.m., the Elmhurst Senior Commission and the City of Elmhurst are hosting a free Community Conversation for senior citi-zens, their family members and care providers for “Opi-oids and Older Adults” at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 No. York St.

Elmhurst Farmers Market

  • Every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. now through Oct., the Elmhurst Farmers Market will be held at the municipal lot just east of York Road on Vallette. Local farmers, bakers and others will have fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, pastries, cheese, flowers, honey, soaps and more. For best parking, come before 10 a.m. or after 12 noon.
