Thursday, Sept. 26

From 6:30-8 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum presents an adult book discussion of Enrique’s Journey. Written by Sonia Nazario and based on the Los Angeles Times newspaper series that won two Pulitzer Prizes, Enrique’s Journey tells the story of a young Honduran boy who ventures to the U.S. to find his mother, who left 11 years earlier to find work and support her family. Discussion led by Elmhurst Public Library and Elmhurst History Museum staff. Program includes after-hours access to exhibits. A limited number of books are available at Elmhurst Public Library.   • At 7 p.m., the League of Women Voters of Elmhurst will meet at the Elmhurst Public Library for an informational presentation by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence about the Firearms Restraining Order law (FRO). Free and open to the public. Not an Elmhurst Library program.

 

Saturday, Sept. 28

  • At 6 p.m., the American Legion THB Post 187 will hold its 4th Annual Military Ball at the Post at 310 W. Butterfield Rd. The evening includes military tradition, cocktails, dinner and dancing to the sounds of the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Tables of eight are $1,000, while individual tickets are available for $125 each. Valet parking is complimentary.   • At 7 p.m., Grammy-nominated Guitarra Azul wil perform at Bethel United Church of Christ, 315 E. St. Charles Rd. as part of the Music@Bethel series. Wine reception will follow. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $5 for students. A family pass is available at $45 for two adults and up to five children. The church is accessible and parking is free. Sunday, Sept. 29

At 2 p.m., visit the “Power of Children” exhibit at the Elmhurst History Museum and see it interpreted through a brief (10-15 minute) muse-um theatre experience in the gallery by performers from GreenMan Theatre Troupe. Each moving vignette will be followed by a Q&A session with the actor. Fourth in a four-part series through Sept. Drop-in program, children must be accompanied by an adult. Elmhurst Farmers Market

  • Every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. now through Oct., the Elmhurst Farmers Market will be held at the municipal lot just east of York Road on Vallette. Local farmers, bakers and others will have fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, pastries, cheese, flowers, honey, soaps and more. For best parking, come before 10 a.m. or after 12 noon.   • The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m. New York steaks are available first Friday of the month. Musical entertainment follows.
