Outdoor Adventure Club in York Center
Are you interested in learning more about the great outdoors? Each session is focused on learning useful skills to help make the outdoors fun including: using a map and compass, fishing, building a fire, and row boating. The York Center Park District staff will ensure you are safe and having fun. The first class is about fishing techniques and skills to be able to get their tackle together and cast away. The second class covers using a map and compass to complete a scavenger hunt. In addition, participants will learn how to build a fire and be rewarded with some s’mores around the fire. The third class will allow participants to go row boating with staff at Silver Lake in Blackwell Forest Preserve. For the third class, participants will meet at York Center Park District Lobby at 3:30 to be driven to Blackwell Forest Preserve. Participants will get to explore Silver Lake for 1.5 hours by row boat. Staff and Participants will return at 6 p.m. Ages: 6-10 years, Tuesdays, May 14-28. Saturday Morning Storytimes in Villa Park
After a two-month hiatus, Marvelous Mornings will return to the Villa Park Public Library storytime schedule in May. Young children of all ages and their adults are invited to join library staff for stories, songs, and activities, including a “make & take” project to enjoy together. Sessions will be held at the library on Saturdays, May 4 and 18; June 1 and 15; July 6 and 20; and Aug. 3 and 17 from 11–11:45 a.m. Registration is not required. Free Comic Book Day May 4
The Villa Park Public Library will celebrate Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children of all ages can stop by anytime for a fun craft they can make at the library or take home. Glen Crest Fundraiser
Community members are invited to join Glen Crest Middle School students in a two-week fundraiser that will support people in Africa who do not have access to a sustainable water supply. From now to May 12, the students will be substituting tap water for other drinks, such as soda, sports drinks or bottled water. They’ll keep track of what they would have spent, then donate the difference to The Water Project (www.thewaterproject.com). Single mothers group to meet May 5
Join the Single Mothers Support Group at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, which concludes the season. Liz Figuera from Sarah’s Inn will talk about all the services they provide for single mothers. It is also a day of Caring and Sharing when participants hear testimonies from the group’s single mothers as an inspiration. Before the talk, enjoy a delicious luncheon with your children. Food for Fines at Villa Park Library
Due to a temporary closing, the Villa Park Public Library has rescheduled its Food for Fines Week (originally scheduled during National Library Week in April) for Sunday, May 5 to Saturday, May 11. Patrons will receive $1 off accrued fines on their library accounts for every one item donated. The library will accept non-perishable food or personal hygiene items. All donations must be unopened, unexpired and undamaged; items in dented cans or glass containers will not be accepted. Food products will be donated to Christian Church of Villa Park Disciples Food Pantry. Personal hygiene items will be taken to Hands & Feet Outreach Center. Only Villa Park Public Library fines can be waived; this limited-time offer does not apply to collection agency fees, lost/damaged item fees, postage or fines/fees from other libraries. Toddler Open Gym in York Center
Join the York Center Park District for some springtime fun. At Open Gym, your child will have room to run, skip, hop and play. Tumbling mats, basketball hoops, scooters and more will be available.
