Freshmen Calcagno, Manchester bring home state medals for IC Catholic Prep girls track

Knights girls soccer team headed to Class 1A supersectional

The freshmen ruled the day for IC Catholic Prep’s girls track team at the recent Class 1A state finals meet.

Freshman Kennedy Calcagno finished fifth in the state in the 800 and 1,600 runs, while classmate Carly Manchester was fifth in the 3,200 and 11th in the 1600 runs.

Calcagno took fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:20.45, lower than her Friday preliminary time. She also clocked in at 5:19.19 in the 1,600, much lower than her prelim finish.

Manchester was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:37.23 and 11th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:32.34.

Manchester took fourth in her preliminary heat of the 1,600 with a time of 5:26.06, while Calcagno was right behind her at 5:26.20.

Calcagno was third in her preliminary heat of the 800 at 2:21.32 and qualified for the finals. Both Calcagno and Manchester also ran on IC Catholic Prep’s 1,600 relay team at state the first day.

Sophomore Alia Johnson was fourth in her preliminary heat of the long jump at 16-11. She also took fifth in her preliminary heat of the 400 at 1:02.49.

Jaida Smith took eighth in her preliminary heat of the long jump with a mark of 16-1. Hannah Johnson was fifth in her preliminary round of the triple jump at 34-0 1/4.

Olivia Slavin was eighth in her preliminary heat of the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.40. Slavin was seventh in her preliminary heat of the 300 hurdles at 51.83.

The Knights took eighth in their preliminary heat of the 400 relay at 52.10. That relay included Smith, Hannah Johnson, Slavin and Alia Johnson. IC Catholic Prep was fifth in its preliminary heat of the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:20.58 with Frankie Chaidez, Calcagno, Manchester and Alia Johnson.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team put itself one victory away from the Class 1A state semifinals after winning its own Class 1A IC Catholic Prep sectional at Plunkett Athletic Complex.

The Knights downed Chicago DePaul College Prep by a 1-0 score to win the sectional title. The Knights advanced to the sectional final after a 1-0 win against Chicago F.W. Parker in the semifinals.

IC Catholic Prep won its own Class 1A IC Catholic Prep regional with a 2-0 victory over Guerin Prep. The Knights were 7-1 winners over Chicago ASPIRA/Early College in the regional semifinals.

The Knights have given up one goal in their four playoff games thus far.

IC Catholic Prep boys track

The IC Catholic Prep boys track team qualified one individual for the state meet out of the Class 1A Seneca sectional.

Senior Michael Johnson earned a state berth after winning the shot put sectional title. Johnson threw the shot 46-9 1/2 to win the title.

Johnson will compete in this weekend’s state finals meet in Charleston.

IC Catholic Prep took eighth as a team in the sectional with 23 points.
