Pick of the Week – The Elmhurst event NOT to be missed!

 

Saturday, May 11

Kiwanis Pancake Day and Mother’s Day plant sale

From 6 to 11 a.m., the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst will hold its 66th annual Pancake Day at the Elmhurst American Legion, 310 W. Butterfield Rd. Breakfast is free. Superheroes will be on hand and children are invited to dress as superheroes. Event includes the Mother’s Day plant sale.

Saturday, May 11

  • From 9 a.m. to 12 noon, First Congregational Church, 235 So. Kenilworth, will hold their 5th annual Green Garden Fair. Purchase organic, locally grown herb and vegetable seedlings. Bring your own container to take home compost. Order a rain barrel, get advice from experts. Farm fresh eggs, baked goods, more.
  • From 3-11 p.m., Communities Against Cancer will hold Relay for Life in the Joe Newton Fieldhouse at York High School. Families are welcome to come out for food, entertainment and fun. Thursday, May 16

From 6-10 p.m. at the Wilder Mansion, UCCA is holding its third annual Taste of the Town: Food for Life. There are 17 Elmhurst restaurants currently participating. Food tastings will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit United Community Concerns Association. Tickets are $60 in advance and $70 at the door, and can be purchased online at ucca-elmhurst.org or by mail at UCCA, 125 W. Church St, Elmhurst.

 

Saturday, May 18

  • The Spring Road Pet Parade will take place beginning at Silverado Grill at 11:30 a.m. with pet adoptions, pet portraits, blessing of the pets, vendors, concession stands, etc. At 1 p.m., the parade steps off at 1 p.m. and returns to Silverado, where the day continues with pet tricks, awards and the announcement of the winners of the Elmhurst Library’s Best Pet Essay contest.   • The Elmhurst American Le-gion Post THB #187 will hold a celebration of its 100-year anniversary at the post home at 310 W. Butterfield Rd. Dinner buffet, musical entertainment, raffles. Tickets and info: 630-816-0811.

 

Sunday, May 19

Elmhurst Museum Day takes place from 1-5 p.m. at all museums in the community including Elmhurst History Museum, Elmhurst Art Museum and the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art. Jump on board the Explore Elmhurst trolley to visit three Elmhurst museums for free admission, family-friendly activities, exhibit tours, refreshments and more. Sunday, June 2

At 2 p.m. in the Education Center, the Elmhurst History Museum will host When the World Came to Chicago: The 1893 Columbian Exposition. The World’s Columbian Exposition is often credited with putting Chicago on the map, and citizens have long been fascinated with the spectacle of this amazing fair that welcomed more than 27 million visitors. Al Walavich, a lifelong Chicagoan, architectural tour guide, local historian, and collector will share stories about the planning, construction, and celebration of the fair along with his personal collection of photos and memorabilia. Ongoing programs:

  • Widows or Widowers (WOW) meet every third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 537 S. York Road.   • The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m. New York steaks are available first Friday of the month. Musical entertainment follows.
