Lombardian Speak Out–August 30

Why is it that the media go out of their way to use all these politically correct phrases to describe people who are in this country illegally? Let’s take the person charged in the murder of that poor girl from Iowa as an example. I read stories online that labeled him an “undocumented immigrant.” Please stop with this “undocumented immigrant” garbage. He was in this country illegally, period, and lived in Iowa for at least four years. This girl would still be alive today if he wasn’t in this country in the first place. Remember all the outrage about the kids separated from their parents at the border? Well, where’s the outrage over this murdered girl being separated from her parents forever?

This is Lombard calling. I happen to live near the train station and once again wondering why the Lombard Fire Department constantly has to sound their sirens on the fire trucks and emergency vehicles throughout downtown Lombard, even in the dead of night when there’s little traffic. I would like to know an explanation why they continue to do this and make so much noise with their horns.

A response from Village of Lombard officials is as follows: “The Lombard Fire Department activates its lights and sirens while responding to emergency incidents in accordance with Illinois Compiled State Statutes (625ILCS). The sirens and lights are used to make sure that vehicles and pedestrians are aware of approaching emergency vehicles, ensuring the safety of motorists, pedestrians and firefighters. When responding with no lights and sirens when appropriate, responding to non-emergency incidents such as lock outs to buildings, unoccupied stuck elevator, invalid assists and carbon monoxide with no illness, we respond non emergent (no lights or sirens).

“The Lombard Fire Department is one of the busiest in DuPage County, responding to over 7,000 emergency incidents last year. When Lombard firefighters receive a call for assistance, they act quickly and responsibly in order provide a prompt response to your fellow Lombardian in need. To learn more please feel free to contact your fire department at 630-620-5734.—JAC

To the caller who is upset that dog walkers are allowing their pets to relieve themselves on homeowners’ property because the urine is burning their grass—and asks them to use the parkway instead—is the parkway grass somehow immune and won’t get burned? Sure, it’s not your property, it’s the village’s, so go ahead, have at it. Seriously, though, listen to yourself. It’s OK to have splotchy spots of grass as long as it’s on the other side of the sidewalk? I don’t know about you, but I am tasked with maintaining my parkway, even though I don’t really own it. However, I admit I have no solution to the problem. My dog always used the backyard and that was on me.

Drivers have probably seen the message somewhere: the school year has started; slow down and keep the kids safe. Good point. Now here’s a message for the school kids, particularly the ones at Glenbard East. It might not be the best idea to walk across Main Street, at a pace of about 1 mile per hour, wearing headphones and staring at your phone. You are so hypnotized by your music and your phone that you apparently haven’t noticed that the “Walk” sign has now changed to “Don’t Walk.” You are moving at the pace of a turtle, and cars have a green light to turn north onto Main Street, but they can’t because you are in the street, listening to music and looking at your phone. Could you pick up the pace a little and pay attention? You are embarrassing your school and your generation.

Hi. I would just like to say, I’m really disappointed in what this country’s become: a bunch of crybabies, whining and crying about anything they disagree with instead of turning the channel the way they used to. They’d much rather cry about everything until that station gets removed. I’ve got an idea. Instead of crying and whining, how about you go get your coffee somewhere else or get your doughnut somewhere else? Oh, no, they’re smoking cigarettes. Why don’t you just go somewhere else? Go away, how about that? Thanks a lot.

If you are driving westbound on Wilson, it’s very hard to see the stop sign at Hammerschmidt. The driver’s view of the stop sign is obstructed by the leaves of a parkway tree. I suppose a lot of people from Lombard know that stop sign is there, but drivers who aren’t familiar with the area might not see it in time. It’s very close to village headquarters. I am surprised someone at the village hasn’t noticed it, or done something about it.

Your concern was forwarded to the village for a response, which is as follows: “The village inspected the low hanging branches identified by the caller and the tree has been trimmed to improve the visibility. Thanks you for reporting this issue. Residents should contact the Department of Public Works at 630-620-5740 or www.villageoflombard.org/reportaconcern to report these types of issues.”—JAC

Peter Roskam’s campaign came by my block the other day, leaving a note saying they were sorry they missed me. I’m sorry they missed me too, because I would love to explain why he absolutely does not have my support! He claims to be a deficit hawk and tax expert, but went along with the billionaire tax cuts, which have exploded the deficit. Trickle-down economics have been repeatedly debunked, but Republicans love to keep redistributing wealth to give it another shot. Now they want to reduce Medicare and Social Security benefits that Americans have paid into all their lives. Roskam is responsible for that, and refuses to meet with constituents to answer for his decisions. I know Republicans really want to tear down everything Obama did, but their health care plan last year was abysmal. Don’t take my word for it—professional organizations from doctors to insurance companies to economists came out against it. I called Roskam’s office daily before that vote to get my message heard, and was pushed aside and laughed at. I hate to see him get a six-figure consulting/lobbying job afterwards, but we need to vote Roskam out. He does not serve ordinary citizens.

How can they be replacing the concrete street on Wilson Avenue in front of the village hall already? Hasn’t this street be replaced about three times in the last 10-15 years?

Your questions were forwarded to the Village of Lombard. The response is as follows: “The village conducted a pavement rating of all village roadways in fall 2017. The village developed a Pavement Maintenance Policy, which was adopted by the Village Board of Trustees, which is intended to determine when roadways or sections of roadways are to be improved. The section of Wilson between Hammerschmidt and Stewart had an overall condition index (OCI) of 50.66 out of 100. The roadway had significant defects that have now been addressed. The village had performed panel replacements in this area in 2003 due to a sewer repair. For a complete list of 2018 projects, please visit our interactive map at www.villageoflombard.org/constructionmap.”—JAC

I have been helped by the National University of Health Science for nearly two years and want to publicly thank them. I am a veteran and have never paid a cent, as acupuncture treatment for veterans is free. They are all very nice—the doctors, Interns and clerks—all are helpful and caring. Thanks, NUHS!

Hello, fellow annoyed people. If anyone could tell me how to stop these nonsense calls where they continuously not only call my land line at home every day, now they are also calling the cell phone number. The Do Not Call List is not working because I have been on that, so if anyone has any ideas, do let me know. These calls have got to stop.

I have to comment about the call last week about Channel 7, “The View,” etc., and all the other sourpusses you named; you took the words right out of my mouth. Great call.

To the person who called in about these Lombard dog owners who are responsible and their willingness to train their dogs to keep on the parkways to relieve themselves, instead of your yard; so you’re telling me, have the dogs relieve themselves on the parkways instead of your yard. You’re worried about dogs relieving themselves? The owners pick up after them. Maybe you should train the skunks and the squirrels and the coyotes and the foxes and all that to relieve themselves on the parkway instead of your personal yard, too. Thank you.

I enjoyed the articles about the two houses that were torn down. One of them was on Taylor, the pink house, the Mutton Hollow one, and the other one was the senior center. You mix the two together and you don’t have a good story about what happened at the Mutton Hollow house. Please check your facts first because it was redundant and it’s a shame. People need to know. I used to know somebody who lived at Mutton Hollow. So, thank you, bye.

I have called into SPEAK OUT before as a supporter of most of Donald Trump’s policies. I give credit to the president for the vastly improved economy, the tax cuts and getting rid of regulations that handcuff businesses, but he just can’t keep his mouth shut. He rips his attorney general in public and goes on these petty Twitter rants. I hope I’m wrong, but have a sinking feeling that you’re going to see a lot of angry voters going to the polls to send a whole lot of Democrats to Congress in November. If that happens, Mr. Trump will have no one to blame but himself. I would really like to enthusiastically get behind this president, but he has no humility whatsoever and he continues to make himself look foolish.

Dear Villa Park and Lombard neighbors: We have all seen the devastation from recent floods, fires and earthquakes. Are you prepared for even the slightest of emergencies? Our state has a website to help, but at the very least everyone of us should have the following in our homes: one case (24 bottles) of water per person, canned and dry goods for three days per person, a manual can opener, batteries, working flash lights, candles and matches (keep matches in a sealed sandwich bag). This is really a minimum for every home in our villages. We are not immune to earthquakes or tornadoes or, God forbid, nuclear attack. Please consider storing items to help you get through the first few days of an emergency. The minimal cost could save lives!
