Run for Hunger 5K

Beginning at 8 a.m., the Run for Hunger 5K will step off from Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, followed by a Kids Run at 8:45 a.m. Participants are urged to bring a non-perishable food item for area food pantries. To register for the race, visit run4hunger.com

Thursday, July 19

From 7-9 p.m., the Spring Road Business Association presents Music at the Gazebo. This week, Lake Effect, a pop music band will perform. Free and open to the public. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Picnics welcome but no alcohol is allowed. Info: springroad.com

 

Saturday, July 21

At 1:30 p.m., at the Elmhurst Art Museum, Michelangelo Sabatino will present a talk entitled “Brick vs. Steel: Modern Architecture & Preservation in Chicago.” The presentation will provide an in-depth discussion about modern domestic structures in Chicago and its suburbs. Sabatino is the Rowe Family College of Architecture Dean Endowed Chair and John Vinci Distinguished Research Fellow at IIT’s College of Architecture. Free with museum admission or current membership. Sunday, July 22

Richard L. Pickard, deceased January 11, 2016, a Korean War and Vietnam War U. S. Army veteran, will be honored during the 1 p.m. honor guard ceremony by having his name placed in the Roll of Remembrance at the Veterans Memorial.

 

Monday, July 23

From 5-7 p.m., the City is hosting an open house event at Elmhurst City Hall to demonstrate the use of the WaterSmart Portal and how residents can track their water usage. Free and open to the public. Info: elmhurst.org/watersmart.

 

Wednesday, July 25

From 5:30-8:30 p.m., families are invited to City Centre for a Wednesday Night Block Party with free live music and kid-friendly fun. Performing in City Centre Fountain Plaza this week is Blue Aura. On stage at Elmhurst 255 North York Plaza location will be Lake Effect.

 

Saturday, July 28

Beginning at 1 p.m., it is Family Day at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Resident families, friends and neighbors are invited to participate in hands-on art activities inspired by our current exhibitions. Sunday, July 29

At 2 p.m., join Elmhurst Art Museum for a walking tour with architect Robert Bunda who will explore modern architecture in Elmhurst including the Henderson House by Frank Lloyd Wright and McCormick House by Mies van der Rohe. The tour departs from the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave. in Wilder Park. Tickets are $15/members, $20/non-members and can be purchased at the museum or online at elmhurstartmuseum.org.

Thursday, August 9

From 6:30-8:30 p.m., the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation invites residents for a skate back in time to enjoy a night for all ages at the Lombard Roller Rink, 2011 W. 22nd St. NOTE: Waivers are required of all skaters and must be signed before participation. View rink rules at lombardrollerrink.com. Children under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult and children 14-18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Skate at your own risk. Friday, Aug. 17

The Elmhurst Children’s As-sistance Foundation (ECAF) will host its 23rd annual Golf Outing at White Pines Golf Course, 500 W. Jefferson, Bensenville. This year ECAF will be honoring Mike La Spisa as Friend of the Chil-dren for 2018. Registration and lunch at 11:30 a.m., fol-lowed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. An open bar cocktail reception begins at 6 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The full golf package is $175 per person or $700 for a foursome and includes lunch golf, cart, putting contest, dinner and open bar. Ongoing programs:

  • Now through July 28, the AAUW is collecting books and media for its annual sale coming Aug. 2-5. Seeking gently used books, CDs and DVDs to sell at its Used Book Sale, which will take place Aug. 2 – Aug. 5 at Lincoln School. Note: No VHS or cassette tapes accepted.

Drop spots include Lincoln School, outside front door; Elmhurst Public Library outside (by book drop slots); Courts Plus inside the entrance; and Jewel Osco at 944 S. York Road.

  • Widows or Widowers (WOW) meet every third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 537 S. York Road.
