Suspect in alleged retail theft flees custody

Police discontinue search after about four hours

Early in the evening of Wednesday, June 13, the Independent learned that the Elmhurst Police Department was in the midst of a search for man who is a suspect in a retail theft. The suspect escaped police custody in the vicinity of North Ave. and Larch.

He was described as a 38-year-old Hispanic male about 5’8” and 180 lbs., wearing red pants and a yellow T-shirt. Police said he may have still been handcuffed.

At about 10:53 p.m., police announced it had discontinued the search because it was believed the suspect was no longer in the area.
