  • At 10:30 a.m., ages 8 through adult are invited to Lizzadro Museum for a 75-minute program on rocks and minerals led by geologist Sara Kurth. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands-on observation skills and hardness tests. Great for rockhounds and scouts, adult supervision required. Fee: $5 per person. Reservations required.   • At 1:30 p.m., kids from ages 8-16 are invited to the Lizzadro Museum for the ‘Rockin’ Jewelry for Kids’ program. Children can make their own gemstone jewelry to keep. Choose two different types of jewelry to make with stones from the Museum Shop and learn how to work with jeweler’s tools. Completes Girl Scout Jewelers badge. Fee $10 per person. 4 on the 4th race will be held, beginning with the 4-mile race at 7:15 a.m., followed by ta 1K Kids race at 8:20. Both events start and finish on Prospect Ave. between Elmhurst College and Wilder Park. Proceeds to benefit ECAF. To register, visit 4on4th.com.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Elmhurst Toyota, Elmhurst BMW and Jaguar Elmhurst will host their annual USO Barbecue for the Troops at the dealership at 440 W. Lake St. Includes hog roast, a moon jump and slide for kids, demonstrations by U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Air Force. Free and open to the public. Info: 630-279-2160.

Beginning at 8 a.m., the Run for Hunger 5K will step off from Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, followed by a Kids Run at 8:45 a.m. Participants are urged to bring a non-perishable food item for area food pantries. To register for the race, visit run4hunger.com

  • Now through July 28, the AAUW is collecting books and media for its annual sale coming Aug. 2-5. Seeking gently used books, CDs and DVDs to sell at its Used Book Sale, which will take place Aug. 2 – Aug. 5 at Lincoln School. Note: No VHS or cassette tapes accepted.

Drop spots include Lincoln School, outside front door; Elmhurst Public Library outside (by book drop slots); Courts Plus inside the entrance; and Jewel Osco at 944 S. York Road.

  • Widows or Widowers (WOW) meet every third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 537 S. York Road.
