York’s Kosanovich takes 15th in butterfly at boys state swimming Makes 18-place leap in biggest meet of the year.

York swimmer Branko Kosanovich ended his season on the biggest stage possible.
Kosanovich competed in the recent IHSA boys swimming state finals held at Evanston Township High School.
Kosanovich, a sophomore, finished 15th in the state in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.97. He came into the meet seeded 10th with a time of 50.53.
Kosanovich was a state qualifier in the butterfly as a freshman where he took 33rd, thus engineering an 18-place improvement in a year’s time.
He also took 38th in the state in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.35. He came into the meet with a seed time of 53.15.
Earlier, York competed in the Downers Grove North sectional where the Dukes placed third as a team behind conference cohorts Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central.
York was fifth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:39.28 with Kosanovich, Jay Jensen, Isaac Marlott and Simon DeGrace. Only DeGrace is a senior.
Ben Harrington placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 1:49.57. He’s a freshman. Jacob Dunlop, another freshman, was 13th with a time of 1:57.66.
Jensen, a sophomore, was eighth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.50. Marlott was 10th in 2:04.23.
DeGrace was eight in the 50 with a time of 22:59, while Gary Derwin was ninth in 23:04. Simon David was 11th in the diving competition with 344.85 points. Salvador Santoya was 14th with 198.70 points.
Kosanovich placed third in the butterfly with a time of 50.53, coming under the state-qualifying time of 52.33. Marlott was sixth with a time of 54.25.
DeGrace was eighth in the 100 with a time of 49.45, while Nick Ward was 11th at 50.70. Jensen took fourth in the 500 with a time of 4:51.28. Brennan Sanders was 14th with a time of 5:27.27.
York was sixth in the 200 relay with a time of 1:31.46. That team featured Derwin, Ward, Marlott and Harrington.
Kosanovich was one of six swimmers to qualify for state in the backstroke. He finished with a time of 53.15, which was under the 53.32 state cutoff. Freshman Anthony Bauer was 15th with a time of 1:01.67.
Harrington finished 11th in the breaststroke with a time of 1:03.41. Derwin was 16th with a time of 1:06.56.
York also was third in the 400 relay with a time of 3:15.52 with Kosanovich, Jensen, Harrington and DeGrace.
