Katherine ‘Kay’ DeYoung, 90

Katherine ‘Kay’ Elizabeth (nee Simpson) DeYoung, 90, our dear mother and friend, passed away at Oak Brook Healthcare Centre, Oak Brook, on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017. She will be greatly missed. Kay was born in Chicago on March 27, 1927 to William and Mildred (nee Harrod) Simpson, and she lived in DuPage County for most of her life. She graduated from Lyons Township Junior College in LaGrange, and from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, with a degree in journalism. Before and after raising her four daughters, she worked for companies including Marshall Fields, Sears, and Nalco Chemical Company. Kay was an involved, long-time member of Yorkfield Presbyterian Church in Elmhurst and later of Peace Lutheran Church in Lombard. She was a strong, compassionate person who loved books, music, nature, and travel. Survivors include her children, Nancy (Gerry) Nordgren of Oak Park; Barbara DeYoung of Gainesville, Fla.; Mary Beth and Margaret DeYoung of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Rachel Nordgren and Caleb Nordgren; her cousin Rae (nee Harrod) Hall; nephew, John Blimke; and friends. Kay was preceded in death by her loving parents, her former husband Bruce DeYoung, and her cousin Robert Simpson. Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst. Interment beside her parents took place in Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.
