The York wrestling team placed second at the recent Kaneland invitational.

Matt Cozzi was an individual champion at Kaneland, while Anthony Cozzi, Josh Mathiasen and Alex Gutierrez each placed second in their respective weight divisions. Jake Smallwood and Antonio Gutierrez each took third.

York was 8-15 overall in dual matches through 23 contests and sported a 2-2 record through its first four West Suburban Conference Silver Division duals.

Mathiasen had a 22-10 record, while Anthony Cozzi was 20-9. Jake Smallwood was 19-10, while Matt Cozzi was 19-17. Alex Gutierrez was 17-15 and Antonio Gutierrez was 16-14.

“We are wrestling strong as a team,” said York coach Mike DiNovo. “We have had some gritty dual performances. Our guys are developing their strengths and trying to minimize their deficits.”

DiNovo lauded the recent improvements of Matt Cozzi, Anthony Cozzi and Mathiasen, in particular.

“We’re a much-improved team,” he said. “We’re learning how to wrestle in tight matches both as individuals and as a dual team.”
