York girls basketball team finishes second at R-B tournament

Dennis hits for 26 points, makes five 3-pointers in win against Taft.

The York girls basketball team ended up taking second place at the Riverside-Brookfield tournament over the holidays.

The Dukes lost 35-18 to fellow West Suburban Conference Silver Division entrant Glenbard West in the title game.

York reached the championship by scoring a 60-33 victory over Niles North in AAA Bracket semifinal action.

In the win against Niles North, York led 18-5 after the first quarter and 32-15 at halftime.

Caylin Rufus led the Dukes with 14 points, including eight in the third quarter. Matty Stark added 12 points, which included two 3-pointers and a 4-for-5 effort from the free-throw line. Danielle Dennis had 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter. York scored 19 points in the third quarter. Kathleen Levins added seven points (3-for-4 free-throw shooting).

York reached the AAA semifinals by finishing off bracket play with a 3-0 record thanks to a 52-49 win against Summit Argo.

York led 12-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 26-21 at halftime. York outscored Argo 17-15 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the fourth quarter.

Stark led the Dukes with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Rufus finished with 12 points, while Dennis and Levins each had nine points. York shot 13-for-28 from the free-throw line.

In a 62-19 win over De La Salle, York led 20-4 after eight minutes and 28-9 at halftime.

Emily Rohman led the Dukes with 14 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Stark had 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Dennis finished with nine points and Levins had eight points.

York opened the tournament with a 54-36 win over Taft. York led 16-14 after the first quarter and 29-20 at halftime.

In the Taft game, Dennis struck for 26 points, which included five 3-pointers and a 3-for-4 showing from the free-throw line. Rufus added eight points, while Kiah Rufus had six points, all in the fourth quarter (1 three-pointer). Stark had five points and hit a 3-pointer.

Caylin Rufus and Dennis were named to the all-tournament team at R-B.

The Dukes were 11-3 overall after the loss to Glenbard West at R-B. York returns to action tonight at Nazareth Academy in a non-conference game.
