On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Independent learned that two arrests have been made relating to a string of recent burglaries to cars and garages on the south end of town. According to a report, police said that on Jan. 25 at about 3 a.m., a patrol officer on the 800 block of Saylor noticed a vehicle with its door open and the interior light on. The officer on patrol learned that there had been many unlocked cars and garages that had been burglarized in the 900 and 1000 blocks of Saylor reportedly between the hours of 2:30 and 4 a.m.

Police said the suspects removed small items and change from the garages and vehicles they entered. With the help of video surveillance in the area, police were able to identify the two subjects believed to be involved in the incidents. Both were located and arrested on Friday, Jan. 26.

On Monday, Jan. 29, a release from the office of DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin that charges had been filed against the suspects, who were Tyler Almaguer, 22, of Chicago, and Fernando Galvan Jr., 20, of Cicero. Both were charged with one count of Burglary and Burglary to a Motor Vehicle, both a Felony charge. Galvan and Almaguer appeared in bond court Monday, where Judge Alex McGimpsey set bond at $20,000 with 10% to apply for Galvan and $30,000 with 10% to apply for Almaguer. The release indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming.

Among the items the two men have allegedly removed from garages and vehicles include a smoker, ammunition and hunting gear.

“We have seen a rash lately of individuals traveling into DuPage County to commit crimes,” Berlin said. “Make no mistake, the quick identification and apprehension of the defendants in this case sends the message to anyone even considering this type of behavior that if you do, you will be caught, you will be charged and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“The Elmhurst Police Department did an outstanding job on this case and for that I commend them. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Dambach for his work in preparing a strong case against these two defendants.”

The next court date for both suspects is scheduled for Feb. 26, in front of Judge John Kinsella.
