Pick of the Week – The event NOT to be missed…

Lizzadro presents Dinosaur Day

On Saturday, Jan. 6, Dinosaur Day returns to the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 200 Cottage Hill Ave., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn about fossils with hands-on activities. See and touch real fossils, put together 3-D puzzles of dinosaur bones, and make your very own fossil imprint to take home. For ages 5 to adult. Fee: $5 per person; no reservations required. Saturday, Jan. 6

It’s time for the annual Chili Open golf outing at Sugar Creek Golf Course. While it’s mainly for fun and bragging rights, golfers also get chili all-day, a buffet lunch after the round, and a raffle with a chance to win free golf for the 2018 season. Monday, Jan. 8

The Elmhurst Garden Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at Wilder Mansion. A light lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. with program to follow:  A Topiary Demonstration by Karen Thomason.

Wednesday, Jan. 10

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Elmhurst Area Branch will host its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library.  Attendees will view the documentary Equal Means Equal with a discussion to follow.  This movie examines both real life stories and precedent-setting legal cases, which offer a clear and compelling look at how women are treated in the U.S. today.

Wednesday, Jan. 13

Lizzadro Museum will present “Say Bones! Dinosaur BINGO” beginning at 2 p.m. for ages 7 to adult. Come play a fossil-filled version of the classic game Bingo, led by Ron Solberg. Learn about 1 million year-old fossils such as trilobites and crinoids while playing the classic game. Geared for grades 3-5, adults are welcome to play too. Rock and fossil prizes awarded. Sunday, Jan. 14

From 12:15-2:30 p.m., there will be a meeting of Single Mothers Luncheon event featuring Author/Speaker, LinaAbuJamra, a pediatric ER doctor, as the speaker. Founder of Living with Power Ministries.Lina uses the same skills serving patients in the ER as she does helping women build their faith and manage critical decisions. The meeting takes place at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church 149 W. Brush Hill Rd, just west of the Elmhurst Hospital. Lina will speak at 1:10, at that time children will go to age appropriate activities. Admission: free. For further information email Jane at [email protected].

Thursday, Jan. 18

From 6:30-8 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum will host a book discussion about “Lincoln in the Bardo,” an engrossing 2017 novel by best-selling author George Saunders. Guests can also enjoy after-hours access to the exhibits. Co-presented with Elmhurst Public Library in connection with the exhibit, “Freedom: A History of US.” Appropriate for adults. A limited number of books will be available at the Elmhurst Public Library or any major bookseller. Registration required, call 630-530-6879 to register.

Saturday, Jan. 27

A memorial celebration is planned to honor legendary York Boys Cross Country coach Joe Newton beginning at 2 p.m. in the York Commons at York Community High School, 355 W. St. Charles Rd. Mr. Newton died in the early morning of Dec. 9 in Arizona. The public is invited.
