Saturday, Nov. 18

  • At 10 a.m. at Elmhurst City Hall, the Elmhurst Senior Commission is holding a free Community Conversation at Elmhurst City Hall called Money Smart For Older Adults, presented by Lori Ritzert, Money Smart Coor-dinator for Suburban Bank and Trust.  Learn how to plan for a secure future, guard against identity theft and prepare for unexpected life events or disasters.   • From 10 a.m.-4 p.m., “Lapidary Day” will be held at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave. See demonstrations in beading, silversmithing, cabochon cutting, wire wrapping and faceting. Sunday, Nov. 19

The Single Mothers Support Group invites you and your children to a delicious luncheon from12:15-2:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church (Garden Room), 149 W. Brush Hill Road, west of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. When the children are dismissed at 1 p.m. to their activities, mothers will enjoy speaker Anne Garnette, offering Secrets andStrategies of being an Organized Mom. Tuesday, Nov. 21

  • Beginning at 1:30 p.m., “Rockin’ Jewelry for Kids” for ages 8-16 will be held at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave. Choose two different types of jewelry to make with stones from the Museum Shop and learn how to work with jeweler’s tools. This class is great for Girl Scout Jewelry badge. Parties of 10-or-more can schedule a private class. Reservations are required. Fee: $10 per person. Info: call 630-833-1616 or lizzadromuseum.org
  • Beginning at 10:30 a.m., “Rock and Mineral Identification” for ages 8 to adult will be held at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave.Geologist Sara Kurth presents an introduction to rocks and minerals. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands- on identification including observation skills and hardness tests during this 75-minute class. Great for rockhounds, and Boy and Girl Scout merit badges. Scout groups require adult supervision. Parties of 10-or-more are encouraged to schedule a private class. Reservations are required. Elmhurst College will host its annual “Festival of Lessons & Carols” at Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus. Performances will take place at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to accommodate this popular event. Free and open to the public.

  • Now through Nov. 26, the Elmhurst Art Museum is showing Hebru Brantley: Forced Field, a solo show of new work by Chicago-based world-renowned artist. Brantley’s pop-infused contemporary art is inspired by Japanese anime and the bold aesthetics of street art pioneers Jean Michel Basquiat, Kaws and Keith Haring.
  • A support group for family caregivers of older adults meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library’s second floor study room. (Not an Elmhurst Library program.) Info: (630) 833-9665.
  • EXTENDED through Dec. 31, the Elmhurst History Museum hosts Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died. It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “Teen Night” designed to sell tickets at Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a fledgling FM radio station—until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago’s rich baseball history. Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12, 1979 in the middle of a White Sox doubleheader and it remains one of the city’s most controversial sports history moments. Media sponsor: WLUP-FM.
