Saturday, Sept. 23 – Hospital holds annual Autumn Affair

Beginning at 6 p.m., the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation will hold its 13th annual Autumn Affair at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago at 120 E. Delaware Place. Tickets include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and live and silent auctions by auctioneer Matt Goebel. Live music to be performed by The DJ Firm. Friday, Sept. 22

At 5 p.m., the Elmhurst Art Museum will host the second in a series of films shown in conjunction with Hebru Brantley’s Forced Field exhibition currently on display. The film is Sun Ra Space is the Place (1974). Free and open to the public.

Saturday, Sept. 23

Geologist Sara Kurth presents an introduction to rocks and minerals starting at 10:30 a.m. for ages 8 years to adult at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands-on identification including observation skills and hardness tests. Great for Boy and Girl Scout merit badges. Scout groups require adult supervision. Parties of 10-or-more are encouraged to schedule a private class. Fee: $5 per person; reservations are required. Saturday, Sept. 30

• Residents are invited to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility, a site generally closed to the public. Tour participants will learn about the quarry’s history, visit various areas including private quarry platforms, and see how DuPage County Stormwater Management currently operates the facility to reduce flooding. Tours depart from Elmhurst History Museum via bus every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and last approximately two hours. Reservations required, ticket sales start Sept. 6 and can be purchased at elmhursthistory.org (Special Events section). Co-presented by DuPage County Stormwater Management and Elmhurst History Museum. Children age 10-and-over must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are $10 per person. • From 7-10 p.m., the Committee for the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts will be holding its 2nd Spotlight Gala at the Elmhurst Art Museum to raise funds for the ECPA. The evening will include music, song and dance along with a gourmet buffet and live auction. ECPA is a not-for-profit (501(c)(3) organization. • At 5 p.m. (doors open at 4), the Harlem Wizards will play an exhibition game against Elmhurst District 205 principals and teachers that will be filled with wild antics and lots of laughs. Food, drinks and raffle tickets will be available for purchase. Tickets are $12 in advance, $18 at the door. Reserved seating is $25 or Courtside Plus tickets are $50 and include a chance to meet the players, a free color poster of the team and a $15 discount on Wizards jerseys. Ongoing programs:

• The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) will host the annual Fall Members Show, featuring a variety of its members’ original artwork, in the EAG Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM), 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave., from Sept. 24 through Nov. 4.  The public is invited to the free opening reception on Friday, Sept 29 from 7 to 9 p.m.  Info: elmhurstartistsguild.org and elmhurstartmuseum.org.

• Now through Nov. 26, the Elmhurst Art Museum is showing Hebru Brantley: Forced Field, a solo show of new work by Chicago-based world-renowned artist. Brantley’s pop-infused contemporary art is inspired by Japanese anime and the bold aesthetics of street art pioneers Jean Michel Basquiat, Kaws and Keith Haring.

• Over the weekends from Sept. 22 to Oct. 15, Greenman Theatre Troupe will perform Urinetown the Musical at their performance space at 232 S. York St. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20, $18 for students and seniors. • Now through Oct. 8, the Elmhurst History Museum hosts Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died. It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “Teen Night” designed to sell tickets at Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a fledgling FM radio station—until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago’s rich baseball history. Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12, 1979 in the middle of a White Sox doubleheader and it remains one of the city’s most controversial sports history moments. Media sponsor: WLUP-FM. • A support group for family caregivers of older adults meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library’s second floor study room. (Not an Elmhurst Library program.) Info: (630) 833-9665.

• The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m.  New York steaks are available first Friday of the month. Musical entertainment follows.
