York summer baseball team sweeps Leyden

Pflum drives in four RBI in first-game victory.

The York summer baseball team racked up three wins during a recent stretch of its schedule.

The Dukes split a pair of games with area neighbor Willowbrook. York dropped the first game 2-1 and won the second one 8-3.

York then swept a pair of games from Leyden. In a 15-2 win in five innings, York led 4-2 before scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. York had 15 hits in the contest.

Joey Chiappetta went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Andrew Deardurff had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Joey Jaeger went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Mike Pastuovic went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Zach Pflum had a hit, a run scored and four RBI. Ian Steinorth went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mike Achepohl scored a run and walked once. Carl Baker had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Dan Brown went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Anthony Scalzitti had a hit and two RBI, while Bo Thomas has a hit a run scored and two RBI.

Brown had a double, while Deardurff, Jaeger, Pastuovic and Thomas each had a triple. Chiappetta stole a base.

Charlie Pakenas was the winning pitcher. He went three innings and allowed two hits, while striking out four. Henry Judge pitched the final two innings and struck out two.

York won the second game 6-5. Leyden led 4-2 before York scored two runs in the third inning to tie the game at 4-4 and then scored two more in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

York won the game with five hits. Clayton Letourneau had a hit. Eric Mato scored a run, while Dan Pierotti had a hit and scored a run. Adam Parat and Brian Kunst each had a walk. Timmy Bowbin had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Joe Orrico had a hit and a run scored. Quinn Hughes had a run scored and a walk. Will Rand scored a run, while John Milling had a hit, a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Kiefer Kroll and Billy Klulth each walked once. Milling and Orrico doubled and Bowbin hit a triple. York stole five bases with Chris Lee, Letourneau, Mato, Milling and Parat each stealing one base.

Rand, Kluth, Danny Chrisman, Bowbin and Milling pitched in the game. Chrisman picked up the win and Milling earned the save. Rand struck out four in two innings in his starting stint. Five York pitchers combined for seven strikeouts.

York then dropped a pair of games to Downers Grove South. In a 15-2 loss, York led 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but Downers Grove South scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first.

Deardurff had a hit and a run scored. Ryan Ross went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Jaeger had a hit and an RBI. Baker had a hit. Deardurff and Ross each hit triples. Baker took the loss. Tamaine Durr and Jake Hadawi also pitched.

In a 3-2 loss to Downers South, Pierotti and Parat each had a hit. Parat and Ian Pickell each scored a run. Mato had a hit and two RBI. Pickell also drew a walk. Mato’s hit was a double.

Milling and Kellen Gilmartin pitched in the game. Milling went the first three innings and allowed one hit.

York was 9-8 in summer action after the Downers Grove South games. The Dukes were scheduled to open the summer league state playoffs earlier this week.
