York’s Stevens Jr., Gill finish in top 10 at boys state gymnastics

Abraham and Mazzocco reach badminton state consolation semifinals

Numerous York boys gymnasts competed in the recent state finals meet with Kelvin Stevens Jr. and John Gill taking center stage on still rings.

Stevens Jr. ended up taking sixth in state on rings with an 8.950, while John Gill was ninth with an 8.800. Gill was 2nd in preliminaries with a score of 9.250, while Stevens Jr. tied for seventh in prelims with a 9.000.

Freshman Charlie Cripe tied for 22nd on floor exercise with a score of 9.350. Freshman Dominic Milazzo was 48th in the event with a score of 8.550.

Cripe tied for 38th on vault with a score of 8.600. Stevens tied for 44th on vault with a score of 8.550.

Stevens Jr. tied for 26th on parallel bars with a score of 8.650. Stevens Jr. and Cripe tied for 21st on horizontal bar with a score of 8.150. Gill was 28th with a score of 7.850. Jake Anderson was 47th on horizontal bar with a score of 7.000.

York girls badminton

The York girls badminton doubles team of Irin Abraham and Grace Mazzocco had itself quite a run at this past weekend’s state finals tournament in Charleston.

Abraham and Mazzocco reached the consolation semifinals, winning four matches during their stay at Eastern Illinois University.

Abraham and Mazzocco opened the tournament with a three-set win over a team from Metea Valley and then went to three in a victory over a Hinsdale South team. Abraham and Mazzocco again went three in a win over Downers Grove North before losing to a Buffalo Grove team in the state quarterfinals.

Abraham and Mazzocco won in three against a Palatine team in the consolation quarterfinals before losing to a Hinsdale Central team in the back-draw semifinals.

York’s other doubles team of Jenna Gallichio and Samantha Reed won two matches at state. They opened with a win against Downers Grove North before losing to Buffalo Grove in the second round. They defeated a Homewood-Flossmoor team in the consolation bracket before losing to a Lake Park team.

York’s two singles entrants each won one match. Laura Hyink lost to an Elgin player in the first round before rebounding to defeat a Glenbrook South team before losing to Addison Trail in the second round of the consolation bracket.

Linnea Dierksheide won her first match against Palatine, but then lost to New Trier in the second round and Glenbrook North in the second round of the consolation bracket.

York baseball

The York baseball team recorded a recent 9-3 West Suburban Conference crossover win against Morton.

York led 4-0 after the first inning and 7-2 after four. The Dukes pounded out 11 hits in the victory.

Ian Steinorth was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Ryan Ross was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Nick Lee went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Mike Bernal had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Joe Chiappetta had an RBI and a run scored. Joey Yaeger had a hit and two RBI. Mike Achepohl, Austin Gelsomino and Brendan Connell each added a hit.

Bernal, Yaeger, Connell and Steinorth each had a double, while Ross had two triples. Lee also tripled and stole two bases.

Austin Gelsomino was the winning pitcher. He went three innings and allowed four hits, no earned runs and struck out five. Burke Corcoran, Carl Baker and Tamaine Durr also pitched.

Earlier, York lost all three games of a West Suburban Conference Silver Division series to Lyons Township. Lyons won the opener 14-2, took the second game 5-2 and then edged York 2-1 in the finale.

In that 2-1 loss, Lyons scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Lyons had five hits, while York had four.

Deardurff walked twice. Lee, Bernal, Yaeger and Ross each had a hit. Bernal doubled.

Charlie Pakenas was the hard-luck loser. He pitched a seven-inning complete game and allowed only one earned run on five hits, while striking out seven against just one walk. He threw 70 of 95 pitches for strikes.
