York boys track team fifth at Prospect invitational

Widener, Bode, Charlie Kern Jr. and Ethan Kern turn in notable performances.

The York boys track team placed fifth at the recent competitive 49th annual Wanner-Knight Invitational hosted by Prospect High School.

Of note in the meet, Cal Widener tossed the sixth-farthest shot put in York boys track and field history. Charlie Kern Jr. won the 800 for the second year in a row at the Prospect meet. Jackson Bode’s second-place time in the 3,200 was a personal best for him by 12 seconds.

Freshman Ethan Kern took seventh in the 1,600 and recorded the ninth-fastest freshman time in the event in the country so far this year.

In the 100, York senior Joey DeBenedictis was 23rd with a time of 12.30. In the 100 dash weightman event, David May was eighth with a time of 13.37, while John Golen was 14th at 14.29.

In the 200, Josiah Scott was 14th at 24.28.

Kurt Namini was fourth in the 400 at 52.09. Mark Bashqawi was 14th at 53.53.

Kern Jr. won the 800 run in 1:53.21. The second-place runner in the race was at 1:55.08. John Rosak finished 19th at 2:05.67.

Freshman Ethan Kern was seventh in the 1,600 in 4:24.14. Freshman Daniel Klysh was 15th at 4:31.39.

Bode, a junior, took second in the 3,200 run with a time of 9:29.85. Sean MacGregor, also a junior, placed fifth at 9:38.87, giving York 12 points in the event.

Senior Obi Nnam was fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.99.

York placed sixth in the 400 relay at 44.06 with Andrew Kelley, A.J. Mimlitz, DeBenedictis and Brendan Chaltin.

The Dukes were eighth in the 800 run at 1:33.61 with Chaltin, Kelley, Mateo Sanchez and Mimlitz.

York placed fifth in the 1,600 relay at 3:28.02. That group included Namini, Mimlitz, Sanchez and Bashqawi.

The Dukes were 11th in the 3,200 relay at 8:34.88 with Mark Morgan, Klysh, Ethan Kern and Dominic Castanoli.

In the 1,600 sprint medley relay, York was seventh at 3:49.71 with Ben Airo, Jimmy Hoffman, Joshua Borzello and Brendan Hill.

Nnam tied for ninth in the high jump at 5-9. Alex Lutter tied for ninth in the pole vault at 12-3. Scott was 17th in the long jump at 19-3 1/4.

Widener was second in the shot put at 55-10 1/2. Golen was 19th. Vince Cahill was eighth in the discus at 136-7. Widener was 18th at 119-7.
