The York baseball team dropped a recent three-game West Suburban Conference Silver Division series to Oak Park-River Forest.

The Dukes lost 7-5 at home in the first game of the series. York led 4-1 after four innings, but OPRF scored six runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take command. York had 13 hits, but made five errors.

Mike Bernal and Joey Yaeger (1 RBI) each went 3-for-4 to lead the Dukes. Andrew Deardurff went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Joey Chiappetta had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Austin Gelsomino had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Ryan Ross went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gelsomino had a double. Burke Corcoran took the loss. Three of OPRF’s runs were unearned.

York then lost 11-0 in five innings at OPRF. The Dukes were held to two hits. Yaeger and Lee each had a single and Lee stole a base. Hadawi took the loss. Zach Pflum struck out four in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The Dukes then lost 2-0 to the Huskies in a game played at Benedictine University in Lisle. York again had two hits, both by Ian Steinorth. OPRF scored both its runs in the third inning. Charlie Pakenas took the loss. He allowed no earned runs over 6 1/3 innings of work and struck out four. Scott Tucker pitched the final 2/3 of an inning and had a strikeout.

York dropped to 16-5 overall with the series loss. The Dukes were scheduled to open a three-game WSC Silver series earlier this week against Hinsdale Central.

York boys tennis

Through late last week, the York boys tennis team had seven dual-meet wins. The Dukes also recently finished fifth at the Hersey invitational.

At the recent Maine South invitational, the No. 1 doubles team of Tom Vogt and Jacob Wit took second, while the No. 3 doubles team of Jared Doan and Domenic Conversa took third. Lion Hoelzel was fourth at No. 1 singles.

Doan, Jacob Alberti and Anshul Shah were leading the team in singles wins through late last week, while Josh Mirretti, Vogt and Kevin Rachwalski were leading the team in doubles wins.

York coach Shawna Zsinko noted the team has been working on playing in challenging weather conditions. “The team is improving on playing in the wind,” she said. “It seems this spring has been extra windy and we have had to adapt, coming off the indoor tennis season.”

Zsinko added the team has done well with the various lineup changes that have been made throughout the season. “As a whole, the group does well with lineup changes,” she said. “They may have typical partners, but the lineups change frequently. Everyone plays where the team needs them most. Our singles players are looking good. We have a tough sectional and some of the singles players might be transitioning to doubles for conference and sectionals.”

Zsinko lauded the contributions of Vogt, John Wheeler and Jared Doan. “Tom, John and Jared have been solid throughout the season,” she said. “They also are great senior leaders for the group.”

Hoelzel also has been a key cog for the Dukes this spring. “Lion has been a great addition to the team for a year, being a German exchange student,” said Zsinko. “He is a solid player and is not quite used to playing on hard court vs. red clay in Germany.”

Zsinko said Austin Taylor also has been making strides. “Austin has been improving with singles and learning how to figure out how to pull out the win,” she said.

Zsinko added York’s progress isn’t reflected in its dual-meet record. “We’ve had some close losses that are not reflected in the overall match score,” she said. “We’ve lost quite a few match tiebreakers 10-8.”
