York baseball team reaches regional final

Dukes’ softball team plays Lane Tech for regional crown.

The York baseball team dropped a recent 3-2 decision to Maine West in the Class 4A Niles North regional title game.

York finished the season with a 23-11 record.

York led 1-0 after four innings, but Maine West scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good. The two teams combined for eight hits.

Nick Lee went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Ryan Ross had a hit, while Austin Gelsomino had an RBI. Ian Steinorth had a hit. Andrew Deardurff stole two bases. York had four stolen bases as a team.

Gelsomino took the loss. He pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and allowed four hits, while striking out four. Jake Hadawi pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed one hit and had three strikeouts.

York reached the regional final with a 5-4 win over Niles North in the regional semifinals.

The Dukes scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game. Joey Yaeger drew a bases-loaded walk to end the game. A Ross homer to left opened the scoring in the seventh.

Deardurff had a hit and an RBI. Mike Bernal was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Lee had a hit and an RBI, while Gelosmino had a hit and a run scored. Joey Chiappetta had a hit and a run scored. Bernal also tripled in the game.

Charlie Pakenas started the game and went the first 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three hits and struck out three. Hadawi was the winner. He pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and struck out two.

York softball

The York softball team lost 7-2 to Chicago Lane Tech in the Class 4A Niles West regional title game.

Lane scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. York was the No. 3 seed in the Niles North sectional, while Lane was the No. 6 seed.

York was limited to two hits in the game, a double each by Kyra Kroll and Izzy Smith. Katherine Karnatz and Jane Moran each stole a base. Smith had an RBI.

Lauren Wojcik was the losing pitcher. She struck out three in seven innings.

York reached the regional final after a 19-3 win over Chicago Jones Prep.

The Dukes led only 4-3 heading into the bottom of the second, but proceeded to score 15 runs over the final three innings, including eight runs in the fourth inning. The Dukes had 19 hits.

Sydney Fuglsang went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Moran was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Mia Tran went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI. Kroll was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Smith was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Madison Collins was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Wojcik was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Maria Gentile was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Andrea Meagher was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Karnatz was 2-for-3 with three run scored and an RBI. Jojo Moyer was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.

Moran had two doubles, while Kroll, Smith, Meagher, Karnatz and Tran each had one double. Kroll and Collins each tripled, while Tran hit a home run. Fuglsang stole two bases.

Caroline Collins pitched the first 1 1/3 innings and struck out two. Wojcik was the winning pitcher. She went 2 2/3 innings and struck out three, while allowing one hit.

York finished the season with an 18-14 record.
