Timothy Christian baseball team defeats Ridgewood and Glenbard South

The Timothy Christian baseball team was a 6-4 winner over Ridgewood in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Brian Schiff led off the second inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two out, Nick Huisman lined a single to left with Schiff stopping at third. Jake Loerop then drew a walk to load the bases. Jimmy Allen then cleared the bases with a double to left-center. Allen went to third and then scored on an error by the pitcher.

Ridgewood came back with a run in the top of the third, but Timothy countered when Noah Marrera walked, Schiff hit a sharp grounder past the shortstop and Jonny Strube singled. Connor Gwaltney singled, scoring Shawn VanTholen, who was running for Marrera.

Ridgewood scored two runs in the top of the fifth, but Timothy got one back in the bottom half of the inning. Marrera reached base on an error. VanTholen (running for Marrera) stole second and Schiff then hit a sharp liner to center that advanced VanTholen to third. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Strube.

Nick Huisman was the winning pitcher. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowed one earned run and struck out seven. Allen recorded the last five outs to earn the save.

Ridgewood took the second game of the series 9-8 on a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Timothy took a quick lead in the first inning. Allen tripled and scored on a Josh Anderson sacrifice fly. Marrera singled, Joey Davidson reached on an error and Schiff walked to load the bases. Strube hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jon Tazelaar, running for Marrera.

Ridgewood got one run back in the bottom of the first inning, but Timothy went on top 3-1. Jake Loerop singled and scored on Anderson’s double to deep center. Two more runs scored in the fourth inning. Huisman singled and advanced to second on a balk. Anderson singled to right scoring Huisman and moved to third on Marrera’s single. Anderson then scored on a balk.

Ridgewood scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Timothy came right back with three in the top of the fifth inning. Strube doubled, Gwaltney tripled and Loerop reached on an error that scored Gwaltney. Loerop scored on a single by Allen.

Ridgewood tied the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Timothy had 12 hits in the game.

The Trojans then scored a 5-4 MSC crossover win against Glenbard South. In the bottom of the first, Allen singled, stole second and scored on Anderson’s home run to left. Marrera reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on another error.

Glenbard South scored two in the second and one in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

In Timothy’s half of the fifth, Marrera singled and moved to third on Davidson’s double. He scored on a passed ball.

Glenbard South scored a run in the sixth to tie the game once again. With two out, VanTholen took the mound in relief of Strube with a runner on base. On his first pitch, the Glenbard South batter lined out to Marrera at third base.

In the Timothy portion of the sixth, Gwaltney led off with a single. Brady Klooster, running for Gwaltney, advanced to second on a ball in the dirt and then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to right by Allen.

Allen pitched the seventh inning and preserved the win for VanTholen. Strube pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed six hits, while striking out two.
