IC Catholic Prep track teams turn in strong performances

Rowell breaks school record in long jump.

The IC Catholic Prep girls track team had a number of notable performances in a recent meet at Glenbard South that included the host school, Glenbard East, Illiana Christian and Riverside-Brookfield.

Kiersten King won the 200 with a time of 27.36, but suffered a leg injury as she finished. Katarina Vorne won the 400 in 1:06.67.

The IC Catholic Prep 800 relay team of Jaida Smith, Olivia Slavin, Hannah Johnson and King won the race in 1:54.71.

Smith was second in the triple jump at 33-6, while Johnson was third in the event at 32-11 1/4.

IC Catholic Prep’s 1,600 relay was second at 4:46.77 with Slavin, Johnson, Nailah Landon and Vorne.

Smith was third in the long jump at 14-8 1/4. The Knights’ 3,200 relay team of Julissa Unzueta, Katerina Vasquez, Anna Gendusa and Bianca Arenas was third at 12:54.46.

Slavin was fourth in the 100 high hurdles at 18.28.

In a recent meet at Chicago Christian, IC Catholic Prep standout Jordan Rowell broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 22-0 1/4.

IC Catholic Prep baseball

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team split a pair of recent Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division games with Riverside-Brookfield.

In a 2-1 victory, the Knights led 1-0 heading into the seventh inning. R-B tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh, but IC Catholic Prep came right back with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win it. Matt Sutton’s RBI single won it for the Knights.

Joey Salvi went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Griffen Eichhorn had two hits and walked once. Sutton had IC Catholic Prep’s other hit. One of Eichhorn’s hits was a double, while one of Salvi’s was a triple. Brendan Russ had an RBI and a walk.

Russ also was the winning pitcher. He pitched a seven-inning complete game. He allowed only four hits, while striking out six and walking two. Russ needed only 70 pitches to register the complete game (50 strikes).

The Knights then dropped a 5-4 game to R-B when the home team again scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win it. IC Catholic Prep led 4-0 at one point.

Trey Morris had a hit, a walk and two runs scored. CJ West had two hits and a run scored. Austin Reed walked twice. Russ had an RBI. John Hoffman had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Salvi had two more hits, while Andrew Falduto had a hit. Hoffman stole two bases.

Austin Reed took the loss. He allowed only two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of work. Reed fanned eight.

The Knights were 9-13 overall through late last week.
