IC Catholic Prep girls track team competes at state

 

Rowell qualifies for boys state track meet in three individual events.

The IC Catholic Prep girls track team was plenty busy at the recent Class 1A state finals meet held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

IC Catholic Prep’s 400 relay team was fourth in its preliminary heat with a time of 51.49. That team included Jaida Smith, Nailah Landon, Olivia Slavin and Kiersten King—all underclassmen.

The Knights’ 800 relay team took eighth in their preliminary heat with a time of 1:53.99 with Smith Slavin, freshman Hannah Johnson and King.

Neither relay qualified for the finals.

Smith was sixth in her preliminary heat of the long jump with a mark of 15-11 3/4. Landon and Mia Valenzuela both registered no height in the preliminary flights of the high jump.

Freshman Gabi Zanoni was ninth in her preliminary flight of the shot put at 31-1. Smith was ninth in her preliminary flight of the triple jump at 33-10 1/4.

King was sixth in her preliminary heat of the 200 with a time of 27.02.

IC Catholic Prep boys track

The IC Catholic Prep boys track team placed second at the recent Class 1A sectional at Seneca. The Knights ended with 92 points. Seneca won the sectional title with 112 points.

Knights standout Jordan Rowell qualified for state in three individual events. Rowell won the long jump sectional title with a mark of 22-6.

Rowell also won the 100 dash in 11.27 and took second in the 400 with a state-qualifying time of 52.03.

IC Catholic Prep won the 400 relay sectional title in 45.16. The Knights also won the 800 relay title with a time of 1:35.53.

The Knights’ other state qualifier is junior Dan McCann, who won the shot-put sectional title with a throw of 39-3.

IC Catholic Prep will compete in the Class 1A state finals meet in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University this weekend.

IC Catholic Prep baseball

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team had its Class 2A regional title game at Westmont against the host school postponed by rain last weekend. The Knights were scheduled to play that game this past Monday at Westmont.

If the Knights won that game, they advanced to the Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional at home at Plunkett Athletic Complex.

The Knights reached the title game after scoring a 6-2 win over Lisle in the semifinals. IC Catholic Prep jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and led 6-0 after four innings.

IC Catholic Prep had four hits in the game. Griffen Eichhorn had a home run, two walks, a run scored and two RBI. John Hoffman had a double and two RBI, while Matt Sutton had a hit, a run scored and a walk.

Brendan Russ was the winning pitcher. He went 5 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and one earned run. CJ West pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and earned the save.
