York softball team off to 4-0 start

The York softball team won its first four games of the 2017 season.

The Dukes started last week with a 15-3 non-conference win over Trinity. York overcame a 2-0 first-inning deficit by scoring five runs in the first and four more in the third to take a 10-3 lead heading into the fourth. The Dukes scored five more in the fourth. York had 14 hits.

Katherine Karnatz went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Jane Moran went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Izzy Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Kyra Kroll went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Mia Tran went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Madison Collins went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Lauren Wojcik went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sydney Fuglsang and Andrea Meager each had an RBI. Meager scored two runs.

Karnatz had two doubles and a triple, while Wojcik had a double and Collins had a triple. Smith cracked a home run. Moran stole two bases.

Wojcik was the winning pitcher. She threw five innings and struck out eight.

York also scored an 8-5 win over Geneva. The Dukes trailed 5-3 at one point, but scored four in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth to record the comeback win. York had 10 hits.

Karnatz had two hits and two runs scored. Moran scored three runs, had a hit and walked twice. Smith had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Kroll went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Tran and Fulsang each had an RBI. Colins had a hit and an RBI.

Smith doubled, while Kroll and Karnatz each had a triple. Wojcik was the winning pitcher in relief. She went 5 1/3 innings and allowed three hits while striking out four.

York then downed Glenbard North by a 13-0 count in five innings. York led 6-0 after two innings and never looked back.

The Dukes pounded out 17 hits in the game. Karnatz went 1-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Moran went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Smith went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Kroll was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Tran had a hit and three RBI. Meager went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Collins went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Julia Derkowski went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Smith had two doubles in the game, as did Meager. Collins had a double, while Kroll, Karnatz and Tran each had a triple.

York stole seven bases. Moran stole three, while Smith had two steals.

Derkowski was the winning pitcher. She threw a five-inning complete-game shoutout, allowing only three hits and striking out five. She threw 43 of 70 pitches for strikes.
