York softball team defeats Proviso West

Kroll, Collins hit home runs in win against R-B.

The York softball team opened the West Suburban Conference Silver Division portion of its schedule with a 16-2 win over Proviso West.

York erased an early 1-0 deficit by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. The Dukes led 12-2 after three innings.

Julia Derkowski was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sydney Fuglsang had a run scored and an RBI. Maria Gentile scored four runs and had a hit. Lauren Wojcik had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored. Madison Collins had a hit and a run scored. Andrea Meager had two runs scored and an RBI. Jane Moran had two hits, two runs scored and four RBI. Kyra Kroll had two hits, two runs scored and two walks. Mia Tran walked three times. Izzy Smith had an RBI and a walk. York had nine hits and took advantage of nine walks.

Derkowski doubled in the game. York stole six bases with Kroll and Gentile logging two each.

Meager was the winning pitcher. She went five innings and allowed four hits while striking out five.

York then dropped an 11-8 WSC Silver game to Lyons Township.

York had 12 hits in the game. Katherine Karnatz went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Moran had a hit and a run scored. Kroll was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Tran was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Collins had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Derkowski and Wojcik each had hits. Meager and Gentile each had an RBI. Karnatz had two doubles in the game. Tran and Collins each had a double, while Kroll tripled.

Derkowski took the loss. She struck out four. Wojcik pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and struck out three.

In earlier action, York split a non-conference doubleheader with Riverside-Brookfield.

R-B won the opener 4-3. The game was tied 1-1 heading into the sixth. R-B scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh. York scored two in the bottom of the seventh.

Karnatz was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Smith had an RBI. Kroll had a hit. Fuglsang scored a run. Meager had two hits and a run scored while Wojcik had a hit and two RBI. Wojcik and Karnatz each had a double.

Wojcik pitched a seven-inning complete game. She struck out eight and walked none.

York won the finale 6-4 thanks to a four-run first inning. York led 6-2 after three. The Dukes had nine hits.

Karnatz had a hit and a run scored. Tran was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Smith was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Kroll was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Derkowski had a hit. Collins had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Tran doubled, while Kroll and Collins each hit home runs. Karnatz stole three bases.

Derkowski was the winning pitcher. She threw a complete-game, allowing six hits, while striking out nine.

York was 8-4 overall through its first 12 games.
