York baseball team wins two games


Dukes move to 5-0 on the season.

The York baseball team continued its strong early-season play during spring break with a pair of non-conference wins.

The Dukes were 1-0 winners over Benet Academy. Burke Corcoran, Austin Gelsomino and Scott Tucker combined to throw a five-hit shutout.

Corcoran started the game and went five innings. He allowed only four hits and struck out three with no walks en route to the win. He threw 54 pitches (36 strikes). Gelsomino went 1 1/3 innings and allowed one hit. Tucker pitched the final 2/3 of an inning and earned the save.

York had only one hit in the game, that coming via a Ryan Ross single. Ian Steinorth scored the game’s only run. Andrew Deardurff, Steinorth and Mike Bernal each had a walk. Steinorth also was hit by a pitch. Ross stole a base.

York then moved to 5-0 with a 14-3 non-conference win over Rolling Meadows. York led 7-0 after the first inning and 14-0 after three innings. The game was stopped in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

York had 14 hits. Deardurff went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Kevin Lipkin had a hit and a run scored. Steinorth also had a hit and a run scored. Nick Lee went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Bernal had a hit and a run scored to go with an RBI.

Joey Chiappetta had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Mike Pastuovic had two hits, two runs scored, a walk and an RBI. Ross had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Jake Hadawi had a hit and two RBI.

Gelsomino walked and scored a run. Brendan Connell had a hit and a run scored.

Deardurff had two doubles, while Hadawi and Ross each had a double. Steinorth stole a base.

Hadwai was the winning pitcher. He threw two innings and allowed no hits, while striking out five. Charlie Pakenas pitched two innings and struck out two, while Zach Pflum pitched an inning and fanned two.

York was scheduled to open the West Suburban Conference Silver Division season earlier this week with a two-game series against Downers Grove North. York also was slated to play Elk Grove in a non-conference game Wednesday before concluding the series with Downers North Thursday at the Downers Grove American Legion field. York is scheduled to face Addison Trail at home Saturday in a WSC crossover game at 10 a.m.
