Former police officer Joe Winkler dies at 81

Joe joined the police department in Elmhurst in 1958 and served the community for 34 years, retiring in 1992. He served on the Traffic Enforcement Unit, keeping a watchful eye for speed violations and drunk drivers. Winkler enjoyed his patrols on the three-wheeler motorcycle, which he rode most of the year.

Joe was a long-time Elmhurst resident who had a wonderful sense of humor. He was proud of his police service and truly enjoyed his time helping and serving the residents of Elmhurst.

“Our thoughts and prayers are extended to Joe’s family and his retired colleagues at this difficult time,” Ruth said.

Winkler retired after 34 years with the Elmhurst Police Department and 11 years as a Code Enforcement Officer. He also served as an Executive Officer of the Illinois Police Assn. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. Beloved husband of Virginia (nee Miller); loving father of Colleen (Ron) van de Kraats, Marianne (Chris) Kragel, Jeanne (Jim) Hedman, Thomas Winkler, Kathleen (Brian) Wurst, Megan (Dan) Marshe, Marisa Winkler and Joseph D. (Leah) Winkler; devoted grandfather of 17 and great grandfather of four. Beloved “Uncle Joe” of many nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 134 Arthur St.
