Elmhurst Police Reports

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

April 14

Officers responded to a reported battery in progress in the 400 block of E. Butterfield Road at around 11:30 a.m. where police said one of the suspects appeared to have a bat in his hand. A white Porsche SUV was reportedly involved in the incident and left the scene, according to police. Upon arrival, police said an officer met with the victim who was bleeding from his lip and blood running down his face. The victim told police he was a property inspector attempting to take photos of the property when Stefan Mijatovic, 20, of Elmhurst, allegedly became confrontational and approached him. Police said Mijatovic admitted to punching the victim in the mouth. He was charged with battery. According to police, Mariglen Jonuzi, 24, of Elmhurst, the driver of the white Porsche, was subsequently stopped and found to be in possession of cannabis. Jonuzi was cited with possession of cannabis.

April 13

• A complainant told police she was at a restaurant in the 100 block of N. York at around 8:27 p.m. She observed the suspect inside with her boyfriend. The complainant went inside and spoke to the suspect. The suspect left with her boyfriend, but came back into the restaurant. When the complainant approached the suspect, the suspect struck the complainant on her left cheek with an open hand. The suspect then fled the area.

• Police said that subsequent to a road rage incident near Maple and First at around 11:55 p.m., a suspect reportedly slapped the victim in the face. The victim drove away and contacted police, but did not have signs of being injured. The suspect denied slapping the victim. No arrests were made due to the victim refusing to sign complaints.

Child endangerment

April 13

Police said officers responded to the report of a child that was allegedly abandoned in a parked vehicle. Officers located the victim unattended in a parked vehicle in the parking lot, according to police, and Jacquelyn Rodriguez-Cueva, 30, of Chicago, was located on the property and taken into custody. She was charged with endangering the life of a child.

April 18-April 19

A victim in the 400 block of Argyle told police that an unknown person damaged her vehicle between the above dates. Victim wanted the incident documented as a matter of record.

April 18

• A victim in the 400 block of N. Elm told police at around 5:14 p.m. that his vehicle was damaged in his driveway sometime on the above date. It is unknown how the rear window was shattered; possibly from a landscape crew cutting the grass across the street.

• Victims in the 400 block of S. Argyle told police at around 7:56 p.m. that both of their vehicles were damaged in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

April 15

• Jorge Z. Sanchez, 40, of Villa Park, was issued citations by police for disorderly conduct-public intoxication, possession of open alcohol and trespassing at a fitness center in the 600 block of W. North at around 1:43 p.m. Police said a victim related that Sanchez was highly intoxicated, entered her vehicle and sat next to her in the passenger seat. According to police, she asked him approximately 10 times to exit before he finally exited the vehicle. Police said Sanchez was in possession of a bottle of vodka with the seal broken and related he was intoxicated and believed the victim’s car to be the taxi he had requested.

• A complainant at a church in the 300 block of S. Spring told police at around 7:30 p.m. that a suspect was told he was not permitted to stay at the site due to him showing up drunk, and arguing with the staff and other people staying at the site. The suspect was offered a meal to take with him, but refused and began videotaping the complainant. An officer attempted to serve a no trespass notice to the suspect, but the suspect refused to sign it. The suspect was informed he was verbally notified, and if he returned to the property, he would be arrested.

April 18

A complainant near Poplar and May, the victim’s mother, told police at around 7:30 p.m. that her son was followed home by another mom from school who scolded him for inappropriate behavior about an incident that occurred at school on the above date.

 

Domestic battery, domestic incident

April 18

A 36-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 400 block of W. Vallette at around 4:45 p.m. Police said it was learned that the suspect threw a phone at the victim, cutting his arm.

April 16

Police said officers responded to a call for a domestic near York and Crestview at around 10:56 p.m. Upon arrival, the victim and suspect were located and were arguing about family matters. The victim claimed that the suspect pulled her hair. The suspect denied pulling the hair and no signs of injury were observed. Both subjects went their separate ways.

April 15

• A 55-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 200 block of E. North Ave. at around 6:36 p.m. Police said an intoxicant complainant told police that she and the suspect were involved in an argument that turned physical. The suspect put the victim in a choke hold and the victim scratched and bit the suspect in an attempt to free herself, according to police.

• Subsequent to a call for a domestic at around 6:23 p.m., the mother and son got into an argument. The argument then became physical when the suspect threw the victim on the ground. The case is pending juvenile disposition.

April 14

A 44-year-old Addison woman was charged with domestic battery at a church in the 800 block of Church Road at around 9:56 p.m. A victim told police that an argument escalated when the suspect scratched the right side of his face. The victim and the suspect have joint custody of their child and were meeting at the above location to exchange custody.

April 19

Andrew C. Poehling, 46, of LaGrange was issued a citation by police in the 100 block of W. First at around 6:43 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to Poehling on the south side of the train depot who was “passed out” with a beer can next to him. According to police, Poehling was located and stated he was homeless and fell asleep. Poehling had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and a 24-ounce beer next to him, according to police.

April 16

• Carl Bronk, 36, of Chicago, was issued a citation by police for possession of open alcohol in public, while Joshua Bucens, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of alcohol by a minor near First and Addison at around 5:50 p.m. Police said that while on patrol in the above area, a reporting officer observed the suspects drinking beer from an open bottle while they were waiting for the train.

• Andrew Conroy, 21, of Glen Ellyn, was charged with DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a crash near Route 83 and North at around 1:22 a.m.

April 15

• Ricardo Garrido, 26, of Glen Ellyn, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic violation near Wrightwood and York at around 2:28 a.m.

• Danzel Scott, 26, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 2:29 a.m.

April 13

Bennett O’Brien, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation by police for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 100 block of W. First St. at around 6:44 p.m.

Fire investigation

April 16

At around 2:49 a.m., the Elmhurst Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire in the area of Huntington Lane and Park Street. The confirmed address was in the 400 block of East Park Street. Fire companies arrived on the scene and found a split level single-family home with fire and smoke showing. Four people resided in the home at the time of the fire. All four people evacuated the home; however, one adult male suffered burns to approximately 40 percent of his body. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and rapidly transported to Loyola Hospital’s burn unit. The home is uninhabitable and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Harassment, threats

April 19

A complainant in the 100 block of W. First St. told police at around 5:01 p.m. that a group of several 16-year-old kids come into the store and harass an employee on Saturdays, and on days when schools are off. He received 20 calls at the store on the above date with a young male’s voice making inappropriate and harassing comments.

April 17

A victim in the 600 block of Alexander Blvd. told police at around 11:28 a.m. that she and her estranged husband became involved in an argument on the phone where the victim threatened to have the suspect battered. The suspect later sent the victim an electronic communications containing images of his genital area. An officer contacted the suspect who admitted to sending the images as a means to get the victim to leave him alone. The victim later declined to pursue the incident.

Sept. 7, 2016-April 13

A victim in the 800 block of S. Spring told police she has been receiving emails between the above dates that contain vulgar language which the victim found to be offensive. Suspect was contacted and advised she was very upset with the victim. No complaints were to be signed.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

April 16

Police said officers responded to a call for a retail theft where Michael Anderson, 48, of Glendale Heights, reportedly fled the scene. According to police, officers stopped Anderson’s vehicle near North and York. Anderson was found to have no valid driver’s license, was arrested and transported to the police station. Upon searching Anderson, officers located a straw with residue inside, and according to police, residue field-tested positive for cocaine. Anderson was charged with possession of controlled substance, attempted retail theft and no valid driver’s license.

April 15

• Manuel Hernandez, 19, of Itasca, was charged with possession of cannabis and driving while license suspended subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 2:08 a.m. Police said a search of Hernandez’s vehicle yielded cannabis.

• Nicole McGady, 33, of Addison, was issued a citation by police for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 12:06 a.m. Police said McGady admitted to having a small amount of cannabis in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle yielded a small bag containing a wooden smoking pipe with cannabis, according to police.

• Maximus Prince, 20, of Wood Dale, was issued a citation by police for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 12:54 a.m.

• Fiorella Tapia, 20, of Hoffman Estates, was was issued a citation by police for possession of cannabis, obstructing a police officer and driving while license suspended subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 2:24 a.m.

April 14

Nasser N. Barham, 25, of Villa Park, was issued a citation by police for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 5:08 p.m. Police said officers smelled a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle, and Barham admitted to possessing cannabis.

Suspicious circumstances

April 18

Police said a victim is going through depression and told his mother he would hang himself. He became upset when his mother told him to do his homework. The victim went upstairs in his bedroom and tried wrapping cords around his neck. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

April 13

A complainant near Madison and Washington told police at around 7:20 a.m. as she was walking, she believes she was being followed by a suspect described as an Hispanic male approximately 40 years old with a heavy build and a small beard, wearing a jacket and a beanie, and driving a white pickup truck. The truck slowly followed the complainant, drove ahead, and then parked on the street as if he was waiting for the victim. The victim walked up the driveway of a house, called 911 and the vehicle left the area.

April 18

Commercial burglary was reported in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 10:10 p.m. Officers responded after the complainant found the front glass door to the business was broken. The building was checked and an empty cash drawer was located behind the counter.

April 17

• Daniel Jasch, 32, and Teresa Klein, 25, both of Elmhurst, were charged with felony retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at around 11: 31 p.m. Police said the suspects admitted to stealing candy and also were in possession of drug paraphernalia.

• A complainant at a supermarket in the 900 block of S. York told police at around 5:41 p.m. that an Hispanic male with hair tied in a ponytail, gray hoodie and gray shorts placed allergy medications into a gift bag and fled the scene on foot. The suspect entered the passenger side of a blue Grand Marquis or Crown Victoria.

The loss prevention officer from a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police that they were reviewing video and observed a theft at around 4 p.m. Two suspects described as Hispanic males placed two TVs into a cart and walked out of the store without paying for the items.

April 5-April 17

A victim in the 100 block of E. First St. told police that during the above listed time frame, a catalytic converter was stolen off a hardware store company vehicle.

March 29-April 17

A victim in the 300 block of N. River told police that his and his wife’s wedding rings were stolen out of their bathroom medicine cabinet between the above dates. An investigation is pending.

April 14

• Margaret K. Roche, 36, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:31 p.m. Police said Roche stole two purses and one wallet.

• A complainant at a restaurant in the 900 block of N. York told police at around 2:40 p.m. that an unknown suspect described as a white male approximately 25-30 years of age wearing a black hoodie, jeans, and sunglasses used a counterfeit $50 bill to pay for a food order. The counterfeit bill was entered into evidence and the U.S. Secret Service was notified.

• Police said a juvenile suspect was seen via video surveillance concealing earrings in her coat pocket at around 8:41 p.m. and then leaving a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 without paying. Officers later located the suspect and placed her into custody. The suspect was charged with retail theft and released to her mother.

April 13

• Angelica McAninch, 25, of Decatur, was charged with retail theft and obstructing identification at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 8:48 p.m. Police said officers spoke to McAninch, who gave a false name and admitted to taking five articles of clothing from the store without paying.

• A victim in the 300 block of N. Clinton came into the Police Department at around 5:15 p.m. and stated that there were two unauthorized transactions on his MasterCard. The victim received a text from his bank and the card was immediately canceled.

• A victim in the 600 block of W. Armitage told police at around 11:19 a.m. that he tried to E-file his federal income tax return but was advised that an unknown suspect had returned a tax file using his Social Security number. The victim started the process to correct the fraudulent tax return.

April 8

A victim in the 200 block of N. Walnut told police at around 7:54 p.m. that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information to open an unauthorized Home Depot credit card. There were no charges made to the account.

Feb. 15

A complainant at a car dealership in the 700 block of W. Grand told police that a suspect traded in a Chevy Impala and stated he lost the title. The dealership completed the sale, took the trade, and applied for a new title. Later they received notification from the Secretary of State that the vehicle was reported as stolen out of Chicago. The responding officer verified the VIN and a hit confirmation request was sent to the Chicago Police Department, which confirmed the theft as valid.
