The Elmhurst Commission on Youth is sponsoring its third annual Teen Job/Volunteer Fair on Thursday, March 23, from 3 to 6 p.m. It will take place in York Commons at York High School and is expected to draw a large crowd of students this year.

“The Fair is supported by nearly thirty companies and organizations in and around the Elmhurst Community,” stated Jackie Tamer, Elmhurst Commission on Youth’s Chairperson.

The Fair is an excellent opportunity for kids from 6th to 12th grade to get exposure to potential employers, either as volunteers or paid employees.

“Some kids are not ready to have jobs, but can get their feet wet in volunteer positions at a young age,” Tamer said. “Those seeking jobs have access to many area businesses looking to hire students for summer employment. Many times, these positions continue into the school year or lead to rehiring in the following summer.”

The Job/Volunteer Fair is just another positive event the Commission on Youth sponsors in its effort to support the youth in Elmhurst, and to bridge a connection between them and the community. The event provides students from grades 6 – 12 with a convenient, low-pressure way to meet and interact with companies that are hiring or providing volunteer opportunities in their age range.

“It is great to see so many kids in Elmhurst motivated to work or volunteer in town,” said Tamer. “I feel it provides them meaningful involvement in the community, and gives them a sense of purpose and belonging.”

Attendees will receive sample interview questions to help them prepare for employers’ questions, as well as tips for interviewing and filling out job applications. Information on obtaining work permits for those younger than 16 will also be provided. The students will also be given a booklet containing a list of each participating business or company and a description of the company’s background and employment needs. Additionally, Amy Thompson, head of York’s College and Career Center, will be available to provide guidance for the students and oversee computer usage in the College and Career Center.

“Overall, this has been a very successful event for the last two years, and we anticipate a great turnout this year, “concluded Tamer. “The students are always very enthusiastic and the potential employers are positive and encouraging. I believe it is a win-win situation for all involved.”

The Job Fair is free and there is no registration required. Students are encouraged to wear business casual attire.
