Villa Park man arrested for alleged motor vehicle burglary in Elmhurst

According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, police have arrested an offender in a case of burglary to a motor vehicle that occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Feb. 28.

At 1:49 a.m., police responded to a 911 call from a resident who observed a suspicious male subject pulling on car door handles in the vicinity of Berkley and Elm Park Avenues in Elmhurst. Upon arrival, an officer located a vehicle on the 100 block of S. Berkley that appeared to have been entered and its contents disturbed. Upon speaking to the owner of the vehicle, it was verified a burglary to the vehicle had apparently occurred.

Officers conducted a search of the area with the assistance of a police canine unit. During the search the offender was spotted and fled from officers on foot. After approximately an hour, the offender was located walking along the Canadian National Railroad tracks near West Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

The offender in this incident has been identified as Demetrius C. Orr, 18, of the 100 block of N. Cornell Avenue in Villa Park. Orr was charged with burglary to motor vehicle and transported to the DuPage County Jail for a bond hearing.

Elmhurst detectives have recovered several items of burglary and theft proceeds that have not yet been associated with any reported vehicle burglaries.

Residents are encouraged to contact the police department to document any burglaries or thefts and to remove valuables from their parked cars and keep unattended vehicles locked to prevent theft.
