Sunday, March 12 — ESO presents We’ve Got Rhythm with instrument “petting zoo”

Beginning at 3 p.m., the Elmhurst Symphony will present “We’ve Got Rhythm,” a program of animated Latin melodies, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road. Members of the Elmhurst Dance Theater of the DuPage Dance Academy will perform as well. An instrument “petting zoo,” takes place from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., sponsored by Luscombe Music, for a hands-on opportunity to try different instruments. Visitation Catholic School 7th and 8th graders will perform Shrek the Musical Jr. in the Visitation School Valentino Center, 851 S. York Road. Friday, March 10

At 6 p.m., Elmhurst Panhellenic organization is hosting a fashion show and silent auction, featuring spring attire from local retailers at the River Forest Country Club, 15W648 Grand Ave. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased at eventbrite.com, or by contacting Woody Ward at 630-247-1833. Saturday, March 11

• At 7 p.m. when guitarist Colin Davin and the Elmhurst Dance Theatre of the DuPage Dance Academy join the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra in an evening of Latin melodies. There will be a silent auction fundraiser with proceeds to benefit the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. At 5:45 p.m., enjoy a discussion led by Dr. Ted Hatmaker. The concert takes place at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road. Handicapped accessible parking and facilities; parking is free. • Geologist Sara Kurth presents an introduction to rocks and minerals at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave., starting at 10:30 a.m. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands-on identification including observation skills and hardness tests during this 75-minute presentation for ages 8 years to adult. • The District 205 Foundation for Educational Excellence will hold its annual gala at The Hyatt Lodge on McDonald’s Campus in Oak Brook. The evening will include honoring Laura Maniola as its 2017 Friend of the Foundation recipient. Tickets are $175 per person and include a plated dinner, beverages, raffles, mini and live auctions. • From 1-2:30 p .m., a special off-site open house will be hosted by the Elmhurst History Museum in Rogers Park, near the family home of Marion Mahony Griffin. It will be a rare opportunity to view her 1931 Ural, Fairies Feeding the Herons. Free to attend, but participants are responsible for their own transportation. No reservations required. Tuesday, March 14

At 6 p.m. the 21st annual Student Chess Tournament will be held in the York High School Commons, 355 W. St. Charles Road. Students by grade level: 2nd grade, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6-8th grade, and high school. All students who attend school in Elmhurst, public or private, are welcome to participate with signed permission slip and fee of $3. Register by March 8. Snacks, drinks provided, pizza will be sold. Saturday, March 18

Beginning at 2 p.m., Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Arts presents a 60-minute program, “Stars & Cat’s Eyes: Light Effects in Gems.” Enjoy a presentation and discussion presented by gemologist and museum docent Sakina Bharani to learn about special gems that show stars and cat’s eyes. From 12:15 to 2:30 p.m., SHE (Sisters Helping Each Other) Single Moms Support will hold its meeting at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 N. Brush Hill Road. Wednesday, March 22

The Misericordia Wild Game Dinner, sponsored by many local organizations and Elmhurst resident Butch Navarro, will be held lat the Elmhurst Knights of Columbus. Tickets are $40 each and doors open at 5:30 p.m., with a cash bar. Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. There will be a silent auction, a live auction and raffles. Saturday, April 8

Starting at 10 a.m. at at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 N. York St. The Elmhurst Senior Commission will be hosting a community conversation on “maintaining a positive outlook as we age,” Prepare to learn helpful information concerning issues that arise as we age.  Maintaining a positive outlook while coping with the challenges of illness, medication effects, fear of outliving one’s assets, loneliness, loss of a spouse, and loss of a child will be explored. Ongoing programs:

• CLOSING March 12, the Elmhurst Historical Museum presents “In Her Own Right: Marion Mahony Griffin. More than a talented artist and architect: Griffin was the backbone of the Prairie School of Architecture who brought the work of many more famous architects to life—including her husband, Walter Burley Griffin, and the inimitable genius Frank Lloyd Wright. This biographical exhibit explores her life, her work, and her legacy.

• Extended through March 26, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art continues its special exhibit, “Fabergé Style Carvings,” which features replicas of Fabergé’s original hard stone carving designs including flower studies, figurines and animals made in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.

• A support group for family caregivers of older adults meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library’s second floor study room. (Not an Elmhurst Library program.) Info: (630) 833-9665.
