Village invites residents to meetings related to referendum question

First meeting set for March 7

The Village of Villa Park will hold a pair of community outreach meetings regarding the sales-tax referendum on the ballot in the April 4 election. The meetings will take place Tuesday, March 7, and Thursday, March 23. Both meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Iowa Community Center, 338 N. Iowa Ave.

The referendum question in the upcoming election asks voters if they want to approve an increase in the village’s sales tax, from 7.5 to 8 percent. If approved, the increase would reportedly produce about $1.5 million annually for the village. That money would be used to pay for infrastructure projects, including the installation of water mains and storm sewers.

The question as it will appear on the ballot in the April 4 election asks:

Shall the Village of Villa Park increase the Village’s Non-Home Rule Municipal Retailers’ Occupation Tax and Non-Home Rule Municipal Service Occupation Tax (commonly referred to as a “municipal sales tax”) from one half of one percent (.5%) to one percent (1.0%) for expenditure on public infrastructure, including the installation, replacement, and maintenance of sanitary sewer, storm sewer and water main systems, in accordance with and subject to the provisions of Sections 8-11-1.3 and 8-11-1.4 of the Illinois Municipal Code (65 ILCS 5/8-11-1.3 and 65 ILCS 5/8-11-1.4)?”
