Margaret F. Mikoda, 97

Margaret F. Mikoda, of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 97. Beloved wife of the late James J.; loving mother of James H. (Beverly) and the late Margaret Mary (Patrick surviving) Schragel; grandmother of Angelo, John, James, Samuel, Jeffrey, Matt and Ellen; great grandmother of 10; sister of the late Henry and Matthew. Margaret was active in the Abbey Seniors and liked to play pinochle. She enjoyed bowling, knitting, cooking and her afternoon martini. Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd. from 9 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Interment Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Doris Helen Hobbs, 77

Doris Helen Hobbs nee Stuckwisch, a longtime Elmhurst resident, passed away recently at the age of 77. Beloved wife of the late Michael M. Hobbs; loving mother of Christopher Hobbs and Heather (Chris) Michalides; proud grandmother of Owen and Haley Michalides; sister of Frederick (Carol) Stuckwisch.

Doris attended nursing school at Illinois Masonic School of Nursing in 1958 and enjoyed being a nurse at York Medical in Elmhurst for 20 years. She was a proud member of the Delightful Duets Twins Club for decades. She was a traveling enthusiast who traveled throughout the U.S. and the world with her beloved husband, Mike. She will be dearly missed by all.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 125 W. Church St., Elmhurst. Interment Private. Grant Achepohl, 73

Grant Achepohl passed away on Jan. 19, 2017, at the age of 73. He was born September 7, 1943.  He is survived by dear brothers Gary (Hilde) Achepohl and Keith (Jeffrey) Achepohl.  He was the uncle to Eric (Danelle) Achepohl, Allen (Cindy) Achepohl, Tracy Achepohl, Adam (Cindy) Achepohl, Jared (Jennifer) Achepohl and Hannah Achepohl.  Proceeded in death by one brother, H. Allen (Kay) Achepohl and his parents, Harry and Virginia Achepohl.

Grant grew up in Elmhurst and attended York High School.  He was a right fielder and proud member of the 1960 York State Championship baseball team.  Grant enlisted in the Army after high school.  He served in the Airborne and was with a MAC-V Team 3 in Vietnam.  He was a decorated Vietnam veteran, serving our country bravely and earning the Bronze Star with Valor and a Purple Heart.  Grant was a salesman with Aggregate Engineers for many years.  After his retirement, he lived in Nashville, where he enjoyed fast cars and fishing. Gertrude H. Unger, 102

Gertrude H. Unger, of Elmhurst, passed away on Jan. 28, 2017, at the age of 102. Beloved wife of the late Harold M. Unger; loving mother of the late Marilyn (survived by Robert) Toepper, Allen (Karen), and Debra (Duane) Sauke; proud grandmother of Michael (Jo-Marie), Carrie (Mark), Christi (Bryan), Matthew (Amanda), Lisa (Jeff), Sarah (Todd), Kristen (Andy), Ashley (Mike) and Whitney (Mike); honored great-grandmother of 21. Survived by sisters: Adeline Hein and Alice Wilbur and many nieces and nephews; sister of deceased siblings Lucille Umland, Carl Schmeisser, Harold Schmeisser, Jacqueline Berger, Elaine Gelinne, Ralph Schmeisser and Leonard Schmeisser. Gertrude will be remembered for her generosity to family, friends, and many charitable causes. Her life was dedicated to creating works of art through her sewing, quilting, knitting afghans and crocheting prayer shawls. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 4 from 10 a.m. to time of service at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Third and Michigan Streets in Elmhurst. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano, Wisc., at later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 142 E. Third St., Elmhurst, are appreciated.
