IC Catholic Prep’s Bianchini wins regional wrestling title

Knights’ boys basketball team wins in double overtime.

Three IC Catholic Prep wrestlers won regional titles at the recent Class 1A Walther Christian regional in Melrose Park.

As a team, the Knights placed fifth at the recent Class 1A Walther Christian regional in Melrose Park. IC Catholic Prep finished with 77 points.

IC Catholic Prep standout Joey Bianchini won the 113-pound regional title. He moved to 31-1 with a pinfall win in 28 seconds in the championship match.

Victor Vargas won the 220-pound regional title. He’s now 32-8. He was a 6-2 winner in the championship match.

David Vargas also won the 285-pound title. Vargas won the title match in 5:43 and is now 23-11.

Frank Jaeger took second at 126 pounds and advanced to the next round. Jaeger is 18-18 this season.

Joe Scott was fourth at 160 pounds and did not advance.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team has found its stride.

The Knights continued their recent hot play with an 88-82 double-overtime win against Aurora Central Catholic in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play.

The win moved the Knights to 15-7 overall and 6-2 in MSC Blue action.

Amari Reed led the Knights with 22 points. Kevin Cheng added 18 points, while Austin Reed had 16 points. Alex Meurer added nine points, while Tony Gaudio and Nico Gaudio each had eight points.

Cheng hit three 3-pointers in the game, while Meurer, Matt Sutton and Austin Reed each had one 3-pointer.

ACC’s Brent Czerak was held to four points in the first half and ended up scoring 41 in the game.

York wrestling

The York wrestling team recently competed in the Class 3A Leyden regional. York finished sixth with 47.5 points.

Austin Hoffmann advanced to sectional. He finished third at 145 pounds and will bring a 32-10 record into the sectional.

Justin Miramontes also advanced to the sectional round. Miramontes took second at 285 pounds and has 18 wins on the season.

Antonio Gutierrez was fourth at 126 pounds and finished the season with a 28-14 record. Blake Quarrie was fourth at 195 pounds. He finished the year at 23-20.
