In a conversation with Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth on Monday, Jan. 30, the Independent learned there had been a case of an employee reportedly slapping a disabled resident of an adult group home in Elmhurst.

Ruth said the incident took place on the 100 block of South Monterey on Wednesday, Jan. 18. The group home is operated by UCP Seguin, which was made aware of the incident through a video recording of the incident. The video showed one of the group home employees striking a seated disabled adult several times. UCP Seguin immediately brought it to the attention of the Elmhurst Police Department.

On arrival at the group home residence, officers arrested the offender and transported her to the police station, where she was charged, according to Ruth. As a precaution, the victim was taken to an area hospital for examination.

Following an investigation, the offender was identified as Lasonya T. Butler, 43, of the 900 block of N. Drake Ave. in Chicago. She was charged with one count of Aggravated Battery due to the victim’s disabled status. Butler was transported to the DuPage County Jail for arraignment.

“Illinois Adult Protective Services and the Illinois Department of Healthcare were alerted to the incident,” Ruth said. “They are expected to conduct their own investigation.”
