Cronin, Hill advance to sectionals for York girls gymnastics team

York announces changes to coaching staff; Five Dukes athletes sign NLIs.

The York girls gymnastics team recently qualified two individuals out of the recent Geneva regional.

Freshman Megan Cronin tied for fourth on vault with a score of 8.95 and advanced to the sectional round.

Sophomore Sydney Hill will join Cronin at the sectionals. She finished tied for fourth on parallel bars with a score of 8.80 and earned an automatic bid.

York coaching changes

York Athletic Director Rob Wagner recently announced changes to the York athletics coaching staff.

In addition to the previously reported hiring of Pia Bartolai as head girls badminton coach and Elizabeth Munn as head softball coach, Wagner announced Nick Criel is the new York boys gymnastics coach. Criel is a former York gymnast.

Shawna Zsinko is the new boys tennis coach replacing longtime coach Tres Heimann. Heimann continues in the fall as girls tennis coach.

Also this fall, Matthew Niemeier will be the new York girls swimming coach replacing Sarah Krizmanic.

York student-athletes sign letters of intent

Five York student-athletes recently signed their national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Girls soccer player Elizabeth Kowalski will play at Miami of Ohio, while fellow girls soccer player Jenna Lundgren is headed to Western Illinois.

York boys lacrosse player Pierceson Mapes will play at Augustana College, while York football player Chuck Walsh is headed to the University of Sioux Falls.

Boys soccer player Evan Weiger will play at Elmhurst College.

York girls basketball

The York girls basketball team dropped a pair of recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division contests to Glenbard West and Oak Park-River Forest.

In a 34-28 loss to Glenbard West, York trailed 10-9 after the first quarter and 13-11 at halftime. Glenbard West outscored York 11-7 in the third quarter and each team scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Danielle Dennis led the Dukes with 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting. She also had seven rebounds and shot 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Jaclyn Saco and Kathleen Levins each had four points. Levins pulled in six rebounds. Caylin Rufus had four rebounds, while Hailey Walker had three steals.

In a 41-40 loss to Oak Park-River Forest, York led 15-9 after the first quarter and 20-17 at halftime. But the Huskies outscored York 14-4 in the third quarter. York did mount a comeback and outscored OPRF 16-10 in the fourth quarter.

Dennis led the Dukes with 15 points and five rebounds. Rufus had seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Madison Park had six points, while Saco had two steals.

York was 13-11 overall after the OPRF game and 4-7 in WSC Silver action. York recently was awarded the No. 9 seed in the upcoming Class 4A Glenbard West sectional.
