York boys basketball team goes 3-1 at Palatine

Dukes’ Hill excels at Hinsdale South girls gymnastics invitational.

The York boys basketball team started off its season by going 3-1 at the recent Ed Molitor Thanksgiving Classic at Palatine.

York started the tournament with a 79-47 win over Chicago Tilden. The Dukes led 35-25 at halftime.

The Dukes then dropped a 66-55 decision to Deerfield. York led 26-23 at halftime in that contest.

York used a 23-12 third-quarter run to help it score a 68-50 victory over Rolling Meadows in the third game of the tournament.

The Dukes closed out the four-game spread with a 56-39 victory over host Palatine. Palatine led 13-11 after the first quarter, but York came back to take a 28-27 lead at halftime and then went on an 18-1 tear in the third quarter to pull away.

York opens West Suburban Conference Silver Division play at home Friday against Lyons Township.

York’s Sydney Hill recently took fourth on balance beam, sixth on bars and ninth in the all-around competition at the Hinsdale South invitational.

Jack Tosh Holiday Classic

The York boys basketball team will again play host to the 42nd Jack Tosh Classic during the Christmas holiday.

This year’s tournament takes place Dec. 26, 28, 29, 30 and 31 at York. The field again will feature 32 teams from throughout the Chicagoland area.

Teams entered in this year’s tournament in addition to York and Timothy Christian include: Batavia, Conant, DeLaSalle, Downers Grove South, Elk Grove, Glenbard East, Highland Park, Hinsdale South, Lake Forest, Lane Tech, Lyons Township, McHenry, Metea Valley, Minooka, Naperville North, Nazareth Academy, Oswego, Palatine, Providence, Riverside-Brookfield, Rolling Meadows, St. Ignatius, St. Laurence, St. Patrick, Sandburg, Schaumburg, Stagg, Thornton Fractional South, Waubonsie Valley and Wheaton North.

Lake Forest has won the last two tournament titles. York won the tournament in 2012.

Elmhurst College men’s basketball

The Elmhurst College men’s basketball team, ranked No. 8 in the country in NCAA Division III, scored a recent 81-58 victory over Westminster (Mo.) as part of the CCIW-SLIAC Challenge in Greenville, Ill.

The win moved Elmhurst to 3-0 on the season. Elmhurst led 41-23 at halftime and outscored Westminster 40-35 in the second half.

Kyle Wuest led the Bluejays with 18 points (four 3-pointers). Eric Crittenden added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kenny Payonk had 10 points and five rebounds. Brandon Schwebke had seven points and six rebounds. Will Nixon had eight points and five rebounds. Peyton Wyatt had six points and Pat Coleman added four points and five assists.

Elmhurst College women’s basketball

The Elmhurst College women’s basketball team dropped a 108-107 double-overtime decision to Westminster (Mo.) in Greenville, Ill.

Elmhurst led by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter and overcame a pair of six-point deficits in the first overtime.

Mikaela Eppard led the Bluejays (2-1) with 28 points and 17 rebounds in 40 minutes of play. Claire Monroe had 19 points, while Hannah Lipman finished with 18 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Michaela Kumer had 14 points.
